After Tragic Crash, ESPN’s Matt Miller Under Investigation for Fantasy League Scam

Matt Miller, an ESPN Fantasy Football reporter, received an outpouring of support after announcing he had his left arm amputated as a result of a car accident on June 17. But as he continues what is expected to be a lengthy recovery not everyone is wishing him well.The Missouri Attorney General’s Office confirmed it has opened an investigation into Mr. Miller, who lives in Joplin, Missouri, over repeated reports he failed to pay winners in dozens of the fantasy football leagues he operated.According to Awful Announcing, more than 40 people have reached out to the website with negative experiences after it published a report that Mr. Miller brought people into his fantasy leagues — with buy ins as high as $500 — under the pretense that he was a commissioner for charity leagues with the winner getting half of the money and the other half going to select charities. The report said participants were also promised Yeti merchandise if they won.When news of Mr. Millier’s car accident and arm amputation hit social media, a reddit thread called him out for his alleged fantasy football scams.“Anyone in a league run by ESPN’s Matt Miller and not get paid as a winner?” one post said. “He has ghosted ours since the championship and provided (zero) communication on what funds went to charity/providing payouts to the winners. I’ve seen a few others in the same boat and wanted to see if this is a wider spread problem than a couple of leagues.”Awful Announcing investigated the initial complaint, speaking to seven individuals who spoke anonymously about their experiences with Mr. Miller, disclosing he often stalled in paying the champions until the participants threatened to make the scam public. Since the publication of its initial article, Awful Announcing has received nearly four dozen similar complaints, prompting the state of Missouri to investigate.A statement to USA Today from the attorney general’s office said it is actively soliciting complaints from anyone with relevant information, including those who are not Missouri residents. “The Missouri Attorney General’s Office encourages consumers who believe they have been misled to contact us,” the statement said. “Attorney General (Catherine) Hanaway takes consumer protection very seriously and we will work diligently to uncover the facts.”A consumer complaint can be filed online or by phone at 800-392-8222.One participant told Awful Announcing, Mr. Miller ghosted him after winning a league. “He stopped returning DMs. Everyone was confused,” the participant told the website. “I won the league and kept messaging him about payment but never heard back. I reported him to (fantasy site) Sleeper, who told me they had banned him from being a known scammer. That’s when I realized, ‘Oh, there are other people who are having this experience.’”Awful Announcing reported that Mr. Miller operated 91 leagues on the Sleeper platform for the 2025 football season with buy-ins ranging from $100 to $500 but ignored the eventual winners.Mr. Miller was very public about the injuries he sustained in a near-fatal car accident and the amputation of his left arm. Posting on June 23 from his X account, He said he was involved in a serious car accident and airlifted to Mercy Hospital where he underwent “a life-saving amputation of my left arm. While I have a long road ahead, I’m focused on my recovery and taking things one day at a time.”He later issued another post detailing his injuries and medical procedures. He also posted a link to a GoFundMe page to help with medical expenses. According to the GoFundMe page, Mr. Miller was hit by a semi-truck and ejected from his vehicle. In addition to a severe arm injury, he suffered a compound fracture of his left femur, a shattered left kneecap, multiple broken ribs and a significant loss of blood. As of July 3, $51,272 had been raised toward a goal of $55,000.“This GoFundMe has been created to help ease the financial burden on Matt and his family so they can focus on what matters most – his recovery,” the page said. “Your generosity will help offset medical and rehabilitation costs, travel and lodging for family members, daily living expenses, and other unforeseen costs that come with such a life-altering injury.”It marks the latest embarassment for ESPN following the scandal surrounding their former NFL Analyst and Insider, Dianna Russini. Ms. Russini was a high-profile reporter at ESPN from 2015 until 2023, before joining The Athletic, the sports outlet owned by the New York Times. Ms. Russini resigned from The Athletic last April following intense scrutiny over the nature of her relationship with New England Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel.Mr. Miller, when contacted by Awful Announcing, directed questions to be sent to him by email, but did not respond to the questions before publication. ESPN has also declined comment.
