AI ‘Actor’ Tilly Norwood To Lead First Feature Film, Reigniting Hollywood’s Battle Over Artificial Intelligence

Tilly Norwood, the AI-generated “actor” that triggered a wave of fury across Hollywood in late 2025, is set to front her first feature film, a move that is sure to reopen one of the industry’s most heated debates.London-based AI studio Particle 6 Productions, the firm behind Norwood, has announced “Misaligned,” a comedy-drama described as “a coming-of-age story infused with existential AI chaos.” Set inside the so-called “Tillyverse” — a surreal digital world located somewhere up in the clouds — the film follows Tilly, an AI entity with no real body, no childhood, and no lived experience of her own but access to everyone else’s. The plot thickens when a rogue bot from the dark web convinces her to abandon her guardrails and begin developing desires, ambitions, and, ultimately, shame.“Our work this year has proven something we suspected all along,” comedian and writer Eline Van der Velden, who is spearheading the project, said in a statement. “AI can support premium narrative filmmaking, but only with substantial amounts of human craft, skill, judgment, and time. That’s not a limitation of the technology. That’s the point.”The announcement arrives less than a year after Norwood became the lightning rod for industry backlash, when Ms. van der Velden claimed the AI creation was close to being signed by a talent agency. The response was swift and fierce. Unions, actors, and filmmakers issued public condemnations, with Norwood becoming the recognizable, computer-generated face of a much larger fight over AI’s role in the creative industry. The actors union SAG-AFTRA on Monday blasted the studio for “using stolen performances to put actors out of work, jeopardizing performer livelihoods and devaluing human artistry.” The union said Norwood is “not an actor” but “a character generated by a computer program.”“It has no life experience to draw from, no emotion, and, from what we’ve seen, audiences aren’t interested in watching computer-generated content untethered from the human experience,” the union said in a statement.Prominent actors including Scarlett Johansson, who previously took legal action against an AI company for replicating her voice without consent, have been among the most vocal opponents of unchecked AI in entertainment.Particle 6 insists “Misaligned” is being built as a hybrid production, with traditional directors, writers, and editors working alongside AI specialists. Training and mentorship, the company says, will be embedded into the production itself.“The filmmakers who thrive in the next decade will be the ones who bring decades of storytelling instinct to these new tools,” said Ms. van der Velden, “and ‘Misaligned’ is where we put that to work at feature scale.”
