American Military Confirms Two Troops Killed in Iranian Attack in Jordan

Two American service members have been killed and another is missing following an Iranian drone attack on a base in Jordan, marking the first American deaths in the war from direct Iranian action since early March. Four others were treated at a hospital and released, the Defense Department announced Saturday.The military said in a post on X that the service members were killed Friday while defending against Iranian ballistic missile and drone attacks and that others had been treated for minor injuries and returned to duty.“Out of respect for the families, CENTCOM will withhold additional information, including the identities of the fallen warriors, until 24 hours after the next of kin have been notified,” the post said.The victims were the first to die of direct Iranian fire since March 1, when an Iranian one-way attack drone struck a U.S. military operations center at Port Shuaiba, Kuwait, killing six service members and wounding dozens.A Navy pilot went missing and was declared dead after his helicopter was forced to make an emergency landing on July 1, but the crash was not believed to have been caused by hostile action. Three sailors were rescued from the crash site.Altogether, 16 U.S. American service members have been killed and over 430 wounded, according to an Associated Press tally.Fighting between America and Iran has ratcheted up since a 60-day cease-fire broke down with an exchange of fire over the Strait of Hormuz on July 6. President Trump declared the ceasefire “over” on July 8 and, six days later, reimposed a naval blockade of Iranian ports.Iran’s chief negotiator, Mohammed Bagher Ghalibaf, officially declared the peace deal “voided” earlier this week. As America has staged daily attacks on targets across Iran, the Islamic Republic has countered with drone and missile attacks on American bases and key infrastructure in American-allied countries in the region.The United States Central Command said early Saturday that its seventh straight night of strikes hit “surveillance sites, military logistics infrastructure, underground weapons storage, and maritime capabilities,” the AP reported.The military did not identify the base where the casualties occurred but America maintains about 3,000 troops in Jordan at locations including the Muwaffaz Salti Air Base, from which it conducts intelligence and surveillance and operates aircraft like MQ-9 Reaper drones.
