OPERA PLOT THICKENS The replacements are in – for James Levine, that is.
The Metropolitan Opera announced yesterday that Paul Nadler, music director of the Southwest Florida Symphony Orchestra, will conduct Beethoven’s “Fidelio,” which opens on March 20. Mr. Nadler replaces Mr. Levine, the Met’s musical director, who requires surgery for a torn rotator cuff.
In addition, Maurizio Benini, who appears often with the Paris Opera, will conduct the Met’s new production of Donizetti’s “Don Pasquale” on March 31, April 3, 7, 11, 15 (matinee), 18 & 21. Derrick Inouye, who has assisted Mr. Levine in the past, will conduct “Don Pasquale” on April 25 and 28. Further replacements for the remaining operas, “Lohengrin” and “Parsifal” (to be presented at the Met) and Wagner’s “Die Walkure” and Mozart’s “Don Giovanni” (to be performed on tour), have yet to be named.
