Dinner & a Movie

Poor Katherine Heigl: After getting “Knocked Up” in her last big-budget film, she’s playing another character who’s having a rough time finding love. In her new movie, “27 Dresses,” she plays Jane, who is approaching the altar for the 28th time — as a bridesmaid. There may be no way to make this kind of occurrence a pleasant one in real life, but if you’re trying on dresses at Bloomingdale’s or Barneys, you can distract yourself from the “always a bridesmaid” blues at those stores’ delicious in-house eateries.
DINNER
Chef David Burke has himself all over Bloomingdale’s: Burke Bar Café offers full-service meals, while Burke in the Box has takeaway gourmet goodies. The café can get busy at times — be prepared to wait if you insist on sitting down — but the food makes up for it. Where else would you see a grilled filet mignon or braised short ribs under the heading “Hot Lunches and Chilis”? The chicken Parmesan comes with toasted gnocchi, and the Big Pretzel Panini comes with chicken, provolone, bacon, tomatoes, and grain mustard. If you’re on the move, the Box offers five salads to go, including Cobb and Caesar varieties, the latter made with smoked salmon. Made-to-order items include “Cheeseburker” sliders, and a Kobe beef “‘Bad As’ Dog” hot dog, served with sautéed onions, mustard oil, and relish. And if you need just a little nibble, get the French fries with Asiago cheese and truffle oil. (150 E. 59th St., between Lexington and Third avenues, 212-705-3800)
Fred’s at Barneys New York can be dangerous territory: You may soon need to fit into a body-skimming gown, but you also may be tempted to order the chicken livers with shallots over crostini or the white pizza made with Robiola cheese and truffle oil. But if you’re not throwing caution to the wind, there’s always the tasty Mark’s Madison Avenue salad, complete with imported Italian tuna in olive oil; a grilled chicken Caesar salad, and a turkey club. Also on offer at Fred’s is the healthful Estelle’s chicken soup — touted as “Grandma’s recipe to cure colds and stay thin.” (660 Madison Ave. at 61st Street, 212-833-2200)
MOVIE
Jane (Ms. Heigl) is facing a life crisis: She’s preparing yet again to be a bridesmaid, this time for her sister, Tess (Malin Akerman), who is engaged to marry Jane’s boss, George (Ed Burns) — with whom Jane happens to be hopelessly in love. Some double whammy, right? But distractions abound as a wedding-beat reporter, Kevin (James Marsden), hears of Jane’s plight and decides to write a story about her bridesmaid history. Could Jane’s selflessness and kindness be rewarded, as the handsome Kevin tails her during her wedding travails? For sympathetic women everywhere, we can only hope for Jane’s good luck. As the movie progresses, though, Jane’s karma is ultimately uplifted, and she is finally able to clean out of her closet those purple gowns, those pink-and-orange saris, and those multicolored flamenco dresses. (Sunday, 2:30 p.m., United Artists, 1210 Second Ave. at 64th Street, 212-832-1670, $10.50)
