A proposal to convert an abandoned fort on Governors Island into an exact replica of London’s Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre — an idea backed by senators Schumer and Clinton, as well as Hollywood royalty such as Woody Allen, Darren Aronofsky, and Judi Dench — will have a public hearing at Federal Hall today.
The hearing is the “final push” to convince the National Park Service to convert the fort, Castle Williams, into a Shakespearean theater. Since the idea was first proposed in 2002, a list of supporters ranging from financier George Soros to actress Kate Winslet to a former secretary of state, Henry Kissinger, has swelled to nearly 8,000 names.
The Park Service, which is in charge of the 22 acres known as the Governors Island National Monument, is currently planning to turn the structure, built in 1811, into a maritime museum.
The founder of the campaign to convert the circular masonry fort, Barbara Romer, has already submitted 4,000 comments from supporters. Ms. Romer said the funding would come from both private and public sources.
Ms. Romer criticized the Park Services plan for the museum and associated educational center. “They have not secured any funding to stabilize the castle,” she said. “To propose a harbor center with such a huge price tag which will be competing directly with Ellis Island implies that it will remain sitting dilapidated for decades. This money won’t be forthcoming anytime soon,” she said.
Ms. Romer said she expects up to 100 people to testify at today’s hearing.
