Bargains were common Friday at a carpet auction, held at Tepper Galleries, featuring works from Salander-O’Reilly Galleries LLC. The estate of that gallery, which filed for bankruptcy in November, is hoping to liquidate objects in its holdings whose ownership isn’t in dispute. Tepper sold nearly 300 antique and “semi-antique” carpets on Friday. None had presale reserves, meaning Tepper generally requires a minimum bid of just $10.

The sale raised about $250,000, said Ken Hutter, a co-owner of the gallery. Five lots drew no bids.

On June 7, Salander-O’Reilly’s furniture and garden statuary will be sold by Stair Galleries in Hudson, N.Y., about 110 miles north of Manhattan. All of the lots were assembled by dealer Lawrence Salander, whose ambitions to amass premodern masterpieces as a hedge against the booming market for modern and contemporary work ultimately outstripped his resources, resulting in the collapse of his gallery.

Mr. Salander and his wife, Julie, filed for bankruptcy protection in November, as did their gallery. The Manhattan district attorney has seized records from their Upper East Side home and the nearby mansion he rented to house the gallery.

Artists and customers alleged in lawsuits that he and the gallery reneged on debts and obligations. Mr. Salander has insisted in testimony that he will make his creditors whole. No one has been charged with a crime in connection with the mess.
