Billion Dollar Startup Claims It’s Genetically Engineering Military Dogs To Be Ready for Battlefield Before End of Decade

The next generation of American war dogs may start life as cell lines in a freezer, carry edited DNA and go to work wearing armor built by one of the Pentagon’s fastest-rising weapons makers.Warhound, a Dallas startup conceived by Anduril founder Palmer Luckey and Colossal Biosciences chief Ben Lamm, emerged from stealth Thursday with $200 million in seed funding at a $1.2 billion valuation. The company plans to clone the country’s top-performing military working dogs, gene-edit them to remove hereditary weaknesses and send them into the field with Anduril eye and ear protection, body armor and integration with its Eagle Eye system, gear the company calls “cybernetic augments.”Sequoia partner Shaun Maguire led the round, joined by In-Q-Tel, the CIA’s venture arm, along with ARK Invest, Franklin Templeton, 8VC, Lux Capital and other investors. Warhound has begun editing genes in cells taken from its first donor dogs and, according to reports, expects its first litter in early 2027 and to field dogs within about two years.“Man’s best friend deserves man’s best tech,” Mr. Luckey said in a statement.Put simply, Warhound wants to take dogs that have already proven themselves on the battlefield and in police work, copy them in a lab, and tweak their genes so fewer fail training. If the plan works, the military and police would get a homegrown supply of working dogs instead of relying on European kennels.Whether a cloned dog will fare any better in training than one from a European kennel is still unknown. Analysts are split on how much cloning can change those odds.“Cloning a proven animal can reduce the odds of inherited disease and give handlers a stronger starting point, which should help,” a political strategist and the managing director of Nestpoint Associates, John Thomas, tells The New York Sun. “It will not, by itself, push a sub-50 percent pass rate dramatically higher.”That pass rate sits at the center of the problem Warhound says it was built to solve.America’s Shortage of Four-Legged SoldiersThe Army created its K-9 Corps in 1942. Today, the Defense Department’s working dog program spans more than 2,200 handler teams, yet Warhound says more than 80 percent of its dogs are bought from Europe.Fewer than half of the dogs purchased complete a training pipeline that runs about three years, so the company says it must find roughly 200 to produce 100 fit for duty. A dog can cost $9,000 from an American breeder, and training one can exceed $60,000.Mr. Thomas sees the reliance on Europe as a genuine weakness.“Yes, the dependence is a real vulnerability,” he says. “A domestic capability is strategically preferable.”Others dismiss the security pitch entirely.“I don’t buy the national security vulnerability argument when it comes to doggies; that’s ‘tacticool’ marketing hype,” a global risk analyst, Dennis Santiago, tells the Sun. “The supply chain is all in the breeders and training programs currently operated by the Europeans. It’s why you speak German instead of English to a police dog.”Copying the Proven PerformersWarhound isn’t starting from scratch. It begins with dogs that have already done the work, mostly Belgian Malinois that have deployed on several missions, and banks their genetic material. The cloning relies on technology licensed from Colossal, which acquired pet-cloning company Viagen in November 2025.For now, the gene edits target hip dysplasia and muscle atrophy, two conditions that take dogs out of service. Further edits, Mr. Lamm has suggested, could give the animals a keener nose or keep them working longer. The approach has precedent abroad.“Warhound is not the first service dog cloner. The South Koreans have done it,” Mr. Santiago says. “It’s unclear what the plan is to substitute for high-quality training, the software of creating a true working animal.”Mr. Thomas notes that biology is only part of the equation.“Genetics matter for health, drive, and certain physical traits, but they are not the main reason an elite working dog succeeds,” he says. “Temperament, early socialization, and high-quality training still account for most of the difference between a dog that makes it and one that washes out.”Mr. Luckey holds no equity, and Anduril owns no stake, while Colossal licenses its technology and holds equity. The chief executive is Dave Spirk, a former Marine who served as the Pentagon’s first chief data officer.A Billion-Dollar Bet With No Price TagWarhound has not disclosed what its dogs will cost or whether it holds a federal contract, though Mr. Lamm says it has briefed several government groups. Machines could also cut into demand.“Robot dogs are increasingly becoming available to the military and law-enforcement communities that can substitute for certain functions that actual dogs have been used for in the past,” Mr. Santiago says. “What I do know is you can buy 100,000 robots on a purchase order anytime you want.”The venture has also reopened a long-running ethical fight over cloning animals.Dog cloning has long drawn fire from welfare groups because it depends on egg donors and surrogate mothers. Humane Society International once delivered a petition with more than 83,000 signatures urging South Korea to stop funding the cloning of working dogs.Mr. Luckey, however, has pushed back against online critics, citing the protective gear, health-focused edits and American Humane’s role in certifying training and reuniting retired dogs with handlers. The fate of dogs that fail could prove thorny.“Failed dogs are not exactly something that you can take to the shelter and put up for adoption. If they are genetically modified, they’re technically proprietary products,” Mr. Santiago observes.More than $200 million is riding on the outcome. Success would give the military a reliable source of working dogs bred and raised in America, and it would put gene-edited animals on patrol with troops and police officers. Failure would send the Pentagon back to European kennels, where more than half of the dogs it buys still wash out. Before any money changes hands, the government and police chiefs must decide what those dogs need to prove.Mr. Thomas says that work should start now.“No contract should be signed without enforceable rules on animal care, published cloning success data, and ongoing independent oversight,” he insists. “Those conditions protect the animals and protect the program’s credibility.”For Mr. Santiago, training will be the deciding factor.“Can it happen? Yes,” he adds. “How much of Warhound’s financial budget is dedicated to the software side of service animal production? I’m not quite clear on that part yet.”
