CBS News is in talks to use Time Warner Inc.’s CNN division for some newsgathering, the New York Times reported, citing two executives briefed on the matter. CNN has held on-again, off-again discussions with ABC News and CBS News about various joint ventures for a decade, the Times reported. In the last several months, talks with CBS have been revived and intensified, according to the executives, who were granted anonymity because negotiations are confidential.
One option is to reduce CBS’s newsgathering while keeping personalities like Katie Couric, the CBS Evening News anchor, and paying a fee to CNN to buy the cable network’s news feeds, the newspaper said. Another scenario would involve CBS keeping its correspondents in a region and pairing them with CNN crews, the people said.
The people cautioned that no deal was imminent. A spokeswoman from CBS News, Sandy Genelius, told Bloomberg News the network had no comment on the report. A spokeswoman from CNN, Bridget Leininger, didn’t immediately return a phone call seeking comment.
