OUTDOORS IN BLACK AND WHITE
Nature drawings by Mary Reilly are on display at DFN Gallery. In these new representational works, she begins by laying down up to eight layers of graphite as a base. The drawings on view capture close-ups of dandelions being buffeted by the wind, lakeside seashells, and a stand of trees after a snowfall. Most of Ms. Reilly’s previous work has been in portraiture. THE PAINT IN SPAIN
The Queen Sofia Spanish Institute celebrates the centennial of the Hispanic Society of America with the new exhibit “From Goya to Sorolla.” The show features 75 Spanish artworks, mostly paintings, from the 19th and 20th centuries. A highlight is a collection of 11 drawings by Francisco Goya. NEED FOR SPEED
Paintings and works on paper by Julie Speed are on display in an exhibit that closes this weekend. Ms. Speed uses Renaissance and neoclassical techniques in her traditional oil paintings. Some of the artworks provide a humorous view of revered arthistory figures such as Cezanne, Goya, and Russian “Suprematist” pioneer Kasimir Malevich.
