PUBLIC MORALITY Michael Sandel discusses and signs his book “Public Philosophy: Essays on Morality in Politics” (Harvard University Press), in which he makes the case that the ethic of individual rights and freedom of choice is not enough to provide a framework for tackling today’s largest political issues. He argues that substantive public discussions on morality are necessary to grapple with issues such as affirmative action, gay marriage, and stem cell research. Tonight, 7 p.m., Labyrinth Books, 536 W. 112th St., between Broadway and Amsterdam Avenue, 212-865-1588, free.
HOLIDAY TRIO Authors Laurie Graff, Caren Lissner, and Melanie Murray read from and sign their joint volume “Scenes From a Holiday” (Red Dress Ink). It contains three festive stories: “The Eight Dates of Hanukkah,” “Carrie Pilby’s New Year’s Resolution,” and “Emma Townsend Saves Christmas.” Tonight, 7:30 p.m., Barnes & Noble Greenwich Village, 396 Sixth Ave. at 8th Street, 212-674-8780, free.
