ESCAPE FROM THE HOLOCAUST Sarah Ogilvie and Scott Miller read from their essay “Refuge Denied: The St. Louis Passengers and the Holocaust” (University of Wisconsin Press). The MS St. Louis carried 900 European Jewish refugees to Cuba and the United States in 1939, only to be turned away. The ship carried the passengers back to Europe, where only 288 refugees to England survived the subsequent grip of the Holocaust.
