BEFORE THE NEW WAVE BAMcinématek explores Eastern European film in the series “Czech Modernism: The 1920s to the 1940s.” Films produced in-between the World Wars and before the popular New Wave movement of the 1960s are featured. The series begins with a screening of Gustav Machat’s “The Kreutzer Sonata” (“Kreuzerova sonata”) (1926), about a wealthy man who confesses to killing his wife while denouncing contemporary society. Pianist Donald Sosin performs a live accompaniment during the screening. MS. SMITH, IF YOU PLEASE The Philoctetes Center for the Multidisciplinary Study of Imagination presents a screening of Vivien Bittencourt and Vincent Katz’s “Kiki Smith: Squatting The Palace” (2006), which follows Ms. Smith as she prepared for an exhibit in Venice in 2005. Ms. Smith appears with the filmmakers as part of a post-screening discussion. Tonight, 7:30 p.m., the Philoctetes Center, 247 E. 82nd St., between Second and Third avenues, 646-422-0645, free.
