HOT POCKETS
New Yorkers who bring a favorite verse to Bryant Park on “Poem in Your Pocket Day” receive a free book of poetry courtesy of the Academy of American Poets. Today, 11 a.m.-2 p.m., Bryant Park Reading Room, 40th Street between Fifth and Sixth avenues, free.
SINGING RHYMES
“From Bukhara to Beirut” is an evening of sung poetry from the Islamic world. Basiru Jobarteh (from Gambia), Ilyas Malayev (Uzbekistan), Fawzia Afzal Khan (Pakistan), and George El-Haje and Yusuf Abdus Samad (Lebanon) are accompanied by the pan-Arab Ayyoub Drummers. The event is part of the ongoing Cultural World of Islam Festival. WORLDLY WORDS
A journal of international literature, Rattapallax, co-sponsors a poetry reading by several foreign-born writers. Participants include South African writer Breyten Breytenbach,Iraqi poet and editor Fadhil al-Azzawi (who has lived in Berlin for several decades), and French professor and writer Elif Shafak.
