NORDIC DESIGN


A panel discussion explores contemporary Scandinavian design, from Ikea to Volvo. The authors of “New Scandinavian Design” (Chronicle), Raul Cabra and Katherine Nelson, gather five designers – one from each Nordic country – to make individual presentions featuring sneak previews of their current work. The panelists are a Danish designer and ceramicist for Royal Copenhagen, Ole Jensen; Finnish architect and furniture designer Kivi Sotamaa; Icelandic product designer Hrafnkell Birgisson; Norwegian glass designer Cathrine Maske, and Swedish furniture designer Monica Forster. BIKE CHAT


The author of “Bicycle: The History” (Yale University Press), David Herlihy, gives a slide presentation about the early days of bicycle inventions. Nancy Rubin Stuart discusses her book “The Reluctant Spiritualist: The Life of Maggie Fox” (Harcourt), a biography of a 19th-century girl who claimed she could contact the dead. SCIENCE TIMES


The author of “Isaac Newton” (Pantheon) and “Genius: The Life and Science of Richard Feynman” (Pantheon), James Gleick, talks with the author of “The Lunar Men: Five Friends Whose Curiosity Changed the World” (Farrar, Straus and Giroux), Jenny Uglow, about the challenges of writing about lives in science.
