California Democrats Show Little Interest in Another White House Run by Kamala Harris

A new poll shows very few California Democrats support the idea of Vice President Kamala Harris running again for president.A Berkeley Institute of Governmental Studies poll released on Friday shows her a distant fourth among potential Democratic candidates.Governor Gavin Newsom received the most support with 28 percent of registered voters who were polled. Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez was second with 14 percent picking her as their first choice. The former transportation secretary and mayor of South Bend, Indiana, Pete Buttigieg, came in third with 11 percent while Ms. Harris only garnered nine percent support.Ms. Harris lost out on support from strongly liberal voters, many of whom prefer Ms. Ocasio-Cortez.Ms. Harris is in the middle of a nationwide book tour for her memoir, “107 Days,” about her 2024 presidential campaign following President Biden’s withdrawal from the race.The poll showed that Mr. Newsom’s early support for president among California Democrats is broad-based, as a third or more of his home state Democrats choose him as their first or second choice for president across nearly all major Democratic voter subgroups.Mr. Newsom has been trying to boost his national image as a foil to President Trump. He even traveled to the World Economic Forum’s annual meeting at Davos, Switzerland, in January to bash Mr. Trump.“The results seem to suggest that Newsom’s more aggressive stance vis-à-vis President Trump, particularly through social media, appears to be resonating with Democratic voters in his home state,” the institute’s co-director, G. Cristina Mora, said in a release. “Though Californians may hold mixed views on his gubernatorial tenure overall, they do see him as the strongest counter to Trump and MAGA candidates. Harris’s earlier presidential defeat, compounded by what appear to be persistent voter biases against women and candidates of color, may also be shaping these early numbers.”The poll did have some warning signs for Mr. Newsom. Fewer than half of respondents approved his job performance as governor.The Berkeley poll included results from 5,019 registered California voters.A smaller nationwide Center Square poll of 1,152 Democrats and liberal-leaning independents has better news for Ms. Harris. She was the clear favorite for the Democratic nomination in results released earlier this week. Ms. Harris was picked as the first choice by 31 percent of respondents. Mr. Newsom only received 16 percent support, behind 18 percent who weren’t sure who they would pick.Neither Mr. Newsom or Ms. Harris have announced their plans for the 2028 race.
