Designers Unveil World’s First ‘T. Rex Leather’ Handbag

Saying “extinction is the new black,” a group of companies has designed and produced the first lab-grown leather product using synthesized dinosaur DNA.The company behind T-Rex leather says it is offering the world’s first luxury product made from “engineered prehistoric leather” that is “structurally identical” to the skin of Tyrannosaurus rex.“This collaboration shows that advanced biology only realizes its value when it can be translated into something functional,” the chief executive officer of Lab-Grown Leather, Che Connon, said in a release. “Our role is to take complex biological inputs and turn them into real materials that industries can actually use.”A synthetic T. rex skin handbag — designed by avant-garde techwear label Enfin Levé — was unveiled Thursday at Art Zoo Museum at Amsterdam. It was created through a collaboration between Lab-Grown Leather, VML, and the Organoid Company.“With T-Rex leather, the goal wasn’t to impose a conventional luxury object, but to understand how it behaves — where it resists, how it holds tension, and how that could shape the design,” the founder and lead designer at Enfin Levé, Michal Hadas, said.“It has a distinct character and responds unlike any leather we’ve worked with. The final bag follows that logic, letting the material define the object rather than forcing it into familiar codes of luxury.”The idea is for lab-developed leather to be the future of the luxury leather market since it does not depend on killing animals for their hides.Researchers started with fossil-derived T. rex collagen sequences and then used AI modelling to predict and reconstruct the missing genetic information. That synthesized DNA was then inserted into a carrier cell line.Billions of engineered cells were cultivated and translated into a “leather” material that they claim is durable, repairable, and biodegradable.“We are not trying to resurrect a species; there’s no need to do that — extinct species are part of nature and extinct for a reason,” the chief creative officer at VML, Bas Korsten told the marketing agency Drum. “However, there’s no denying that we can find opportunities and benefits in learning from them to create and build materials for the future — especially if it means more sustainable alternatives.”The new product could face an uphill battle to win over the luxury market. Many other alternatives have struggled to gain a foothold, but the makers of T-Rex Leather claim they have a better shot because they are not simply creating an imitation leather but creating a new form of something real.The one bag will remain on display at the museum for six weeks before being auctioned to the highest bidder. The opening bid is expected to top $600,000.The backers hope to develop products to be commercially sold in the luxury market including fashion, automotive, and other high-performance material categories.
