Fashion Meets Fury: Gucci’s Entry Into Formula 1 Adds to an Already Historic Season

A Formula 1 season already electrified by a teenager winning four consecutive races just got more intriguing. The Italian luxury powerhouse Gucci announced recently it will be the title sponsor for the Alpine Formula 1 racing team in 2027, bringing more glamour to an already glitzy sport.The announcement comes just as Formula 1 hits the wealthy streets of Monaco where Kimi Antonelli, 19, seeks his fifth consecutive win for Mercedes at the Monaco Grand Prix this weekend.The historic quest is worthy of its own headline, but this week also represents a cultural shift, the first race where Gucci becomes more than a fashion accessory, but a major player in the paddock by becoming the first luxury fashion house to serve as a title partner in Formula 1.Gucci president and CEO Francesca Bellentini called Formula l the perfect platform for the brand’s global expansion. “Formula 1 represents a unique convergence of performance, culture, and global reach,” he said in a statement released by the company, “and the Alpine Formula 1 team is the right partner to bring this vision to life.”The Gucci Racing Alpine team will presumably feature a livery that contains the signature double-G with red and green bands. Gucci’s partnership with Formula 1 makes sense given the celebrity following the sport has generated in the post-COVID era through streaming exposure and rapid growth in North America.LVMH, the luxury goods conglomerate headquartered in Paris, already has a major presence in F1 through deals with TAG Heuer, Louis Vuitton and Moet Hennessy. Now Gucci enters, betting that those who can afford F1 tickets to races in Miami and Monaco can probably afford a Gucci bag or pair of loafers.Gucci branding in F1 follows an emerging presence in tennis. World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka became a Gucci brand ambassador in January and has since draped herself in the Gucci wardrobe on almost every major stage, from the front rows of Milan Fashion Week to the Italian Open last month.Jannik Sinner became the first-ever tennis player to carry a luxury handbag on the court when he got special permission to tote a Gucci duffle bag at the 2023 Wimbledon Championships.Luca de Meo, chief executive of Gucci’s parent company, Kering, said the global demographics following Formula 1 are an attractive benefit. “Formula 1 has evolved far beyond sport to become one of the world’s most powerful premium content platforms, reaching over 1.5 billion people each season and inspiring a rapidly expanding, younger and increasingly female audience,” he said. “We see it as a unique platform for a luxury brand to push boundaries, spark meaningful connections and build long-term value and brand desirability.”An initial three-year deal is reportedly worth between $50 and $60 million per season, according to the Race, and comes as the Alpine team is off to a good start to its 2026 season. After finishing last in 2025, Alpine currently stands fifth in the Constructors standings with 35 points, sandwiched between Red Bull Racing and Racing Bulls.Despite the improvement, Alpine trails Mercedes by 184 points going into the season’s sixth race. The Silver Arrows won the season opener in Australia with George Russell at the wheel and claimed the next four thanks to Mr. Antonelli, who became the first F1 driver to win his first four Grand Prix races consecutively.With 131 points, Mr. Antonelli now holds a 43-point advantage over Mr. Russell, who suffered a power failure on lap 30 of the Canadian Grand Prix and was forced to retire.The growing rivalry between the two teammates has added spice to an F1 season that is adding fashion to the fury.
