A Saudi prince, Alwaleed bin Talal, who co-owns the ART TV network which includes the anti-American, anti-Semitic, pro-Jihad Arabic TV channel Iqra, has recently given millions to American groups, including $5 million to the Carter Center.

At an annual convention marking the 25th anniversary of the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee (ADC) on June 1, which honored Rep. John Conyers, a Democrat of Michigan, and Rep. Nick Rahall, a Democrat of West Virginia, it was announced that the prince would donate $6 million to the ADC. Prince Alwaleed, who is the world’s fourth richest person according to Forbes magazine, received the ADC’s Global Achievement Award for his “outstanding humanitarian and philanthropic work.”

Iqra first made headlines in 2002 when MEMRI translated a program featuring a 3-year-old Saudi girl named Basmallah calling Jews “apes and pigs” – she said it was a lesson from the Koran. The prince is currently involved in creating a new religious satellite channel that will make its debut later this year and can be expected to complement Iqra’s content.

Available in America via satellite, Iqra bills itself as dedicated to bringing “the teachings of Islam into the homes and hearts of Arabs worldwide.” According to its Web site, it offers religious, social, and economic programming, reaching viewers in the Middle East, Asia, Europe, and Africa. The station aims to explain concepts such as the ideological foundations of Islam.

Religious, political, and academic figures from throughout the Arab and Muslim world frequently appear on Iqra TV espousing hatred. Clips are available at www.memritv.org.

Over the past year, Iqra has broadcast lectures by leading Saudi clerics such as Aed al-Qarni, who encourages Muslims to gain victory over the West by “slitting of throats and shattering skulls.” A former employee of the Saudi Embassy in Washington, D.C., Sheikh Al-Munajjid, said in an Iqra appearance that spreading Islam by the sword is justified, “the stupid acts of these Jews and Christians mobilize the [Arab] nation,” and “The big explosion will come!” Al-Azhar Sheikh al-Mussayar said on an Iqra talk show that Muslims should confront non-Muslims, and be aggressors – rather than defenders – of their religion against the Jews and Christians.

During another program, a reporter asked passersby on the streets of Saudi Arabia if they would shake hands with a Jew. All responded by cursing Jews. A soap opera called “Stories from before the Verses Came Down” portrayed Jews distorting the Torah and admitting that they live off the blood of prophets. The series also depicted the Jews refusing to acknowledge Mohammed’s prophecy and called them “pigs.”

Conspiracy theories surrounding the attacks of September 11, 2001, are also often broadcast on Iqra. An Egyptian historian stated on a talk show that the Vatican had delegated to America its mission to destroy Islam and that she also said that America itself carried out the attacks on assignment by the World Council of Churches. An Islamic preacher in California claimed in an interview that American authorities refused to investigate September 11 because America fabricated the event. And a former dean of Humanities at Cairo’s Ein Shams University similarly asserted on a talk show that America was 100% behind the attacks.

Iqra programming frequently endorses suicide bombings in Israel. On one children’s show, Sheikh Ahmad Qattan pleaded with Muslim parents to teach their children to become martyrs. “Oh mothers and fathers, you must train your children every night, before they go to bed, to go on raids in order to liberate Jerusalem and Al-Aqsa, and when he goes to sleep, after reading the Koran and the bedside verses, he should recite together with you the prayer for martyrdom,” he said.

Prince Talal has also been praised for his commitment to women’s rights. And Iqra has programming devoted to women’s issues – much of it supports explicit violence against them. For example, on a weekly talk show, host Muhammed al-Mutwah has displayed different-sized rods to explain how to use them to beat viewers’ wives. One was 10 feet long. It is unlikely that organizations such as former President Carter’s Peace Center would have accepted funds from Prince Alwaleed if they were aware that he is also funding the kind of incitement against America broadcast on Iqra TV.
