House Committee Subpoenas Leon Black After He ‘Stormed Out’ of Epstein Interview

A House committee investigating Jeffrey Epstein has slapped billionaire investor Leon Black with two subpoenas to answer questions about possible non-disclosure agreements with women.House Oversight Committee chairman James Comer, on Friday, issued the subpoenas to Mr. Black during a voluntary transcribed interview on Capitol Hill.Members of the committee say they have reason to believe that Mr. Black signed non-disclosure agreements with several women connected to Epstein.“Mr. Black stated he wouldn’t answer questions about NDAs. Answers about the terms and substance of these NDAs are critical to our investigation,” Mr. Comer said in a statement after the interview. “For this reason, today I issued subpoenas to Mr. Black for NDAs and to appear for a deposition in the near future.”The first subpoena compels Mr. Black to appear under oath for a deposition on July 16, and the second subpoena requires him to produce non-disclosure agreements to the committee. “We owe it to the American people to provide transparency and ensure accountability for survivors,” Mr. Comer said.The committee’s ranking member, Congressman Robert Garcia, said Mr. Black “stormed out” of the interview when asked about the agreements. “Leon Black had a chance to do the right thing and help us bring justice to the survivors. Instead, he ran out of the room when he was pressed for information about his non-disclosure agreements with women and his relationship with survivors of Jeffrey Epstein,” Mr. Garcia said in a statement.Mr. Black’s attorney, Susan Estrich, said her client doesn’t have any non-disclosure agreements and the interview was political theater. “They made a premeditated political decision to serve him with subpoenas after less than an hour of questioning, and before they even asked a single question about his legitimate payments to Epstein,” Ms. Estrich told reporters outside the hearing room. “This was nothing more than a planned political stunt.”Ms. Estrich said that Mr. Black told the committee in an opening statement that he had never abused a woman, was never with an underaged woman, and never engaged in sex trafficking. She added that Mr. Black told the committee he never paid Epstein for access to women or for blackmail. Mr. Black — a co-founder and former chief executive of the private equity firm Apollo Global Management — had a longstanding relationship with Epstein and was his primary client. He paid Epstein $158 million over a several year period but said it was for tax and estate planning.Mr. Black’s name is mentioned hundreds of times in the Epstein files. Members of the committee say Mr. Black forced women to sign non-disclosure agreements to keep them quiet.Mr. Black is the 16th person to appear before the committee as part of its Epstein investigation. The committee has also questioned President Clinton, Hillary Clinton, Bill Gates, and Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick.
