Israeli Boy, 14, Killed and 24 Wounded When Unexploded Hezbollah Cluster Munition Detonates During School Hike

A 14-year-old Israeli boy was killed and 24 others wounded as an unexploded Hezbollah cluster submunition detonated in northern Israel. The victim was named as Elazar Yair Wilensky from the 9th grade who went on a hike along with his fellow students and teachers from ORT Ma’alot school in the Ramim Ridge area near the border with Lebanon. Israeli media reported that one of the students found the unexploded submunition and put it in their backpack where it later exploded. Magen David Adom emergency medical technician David Radko said he was the first to arrive at the scene and “immediately saw the scale of the incident. The casualties were scattered along the road, some holding and trying to help their injured friends. Further along the road, I saw the more seriously injured casualties. I immediately began triaging the casualties and controlling bleeding.”“Despite the distressing scenes and their suffering, the injured cooperated with me exceptionally well. Everyone tried to help their friends as much as they could. Some even applied tourniquets to their friends to stop the bleeding. I gave them instructions on how to help, and they listened and followed them,” he said. “It was an extremely difficult and complex scene, and it is not easy to see children injured in this condition. We did everything we could to provide them with the best possible treatment,” Mr. Radko added. Elazar was described by his family as “a child who loved life – smart and thoughtful, full of joy, a good and beloved friend, with his whole future still ahead of him,” according to Ha’aretz Daily. Five children remain in serious condition. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu visited Rambam Hospital together with Education Minister Yoav Kisch following the deadly explosion. Mr. Netanyahu’s office said he instructed the Commander of the IDF Home Front Command to “reinforce the guidelines and warnings for the general public, emphasize the strict prohibition against touching unexploded ordnance, and to conduct extensive searches to locate unexploded items.”Israeli authorities are now investigating how the hike was approved in an area where the KKL-JNF Jewish National Fund had warned of “war damage.” KKL-JNF chief, Eyal Ostrinsky, told Army Radio they still hadn’t finished restoring the area: “We still haven’t finished taking care of it. Until last June we weren’t able to do any work there. Only on June 26 did we enter to rehabilitate that forest, and aside from the trail itself, which is critical for security, all the rest of the area we haven’t yet finished restoring.”
