Israel’s President, After a Triple Killing, Calls Arab-Sector Violence a ‘National Emergency’

Israel’s President has declared the spiralling violent crime in Arab society a “national emergency” following a triple homicide on Thursday morning. Three Arab-Israeli men, aged 25, 35 and 60, were shot and killed in the Bedouin village of Suweid Hamira in northern Israel, two of whom were declared dead on the scene by medics. “Thirty-three people have been murdered in Arab society since the beginning of the year. This is not a ‘sector statistic,’ this is a painful Israeli tragedy,” Mr. Herzog was quoted as saying in Israeli media. “It’s time to wake up. The blood spilled on the streets of Arab society is the blood of the country’s citizens, and the rampant crime is a clear and immediate danger to the security of all of Israeli society. Yes, all of it!” he added. Israeli-Arab lawmakers and leading figures in the Arab community have long decried a lack of effort by police and the government to crack down on crime. Last week, tens of thousands of Jews and Arabs demonstrated in Tel Aviv against the spiralling crime, while business owners and residents in the northern Arab-Israeli town of Sakhnin went on strike last month. “This is a national emergency. This violence will not stop within the borders of this or that village — it is a disease that gnaws at the foundations of us all. The law enforcement system and the political echelon must join hands,” Mr. Herzog said on Thursday. Dr. Walid Nasser, deputy mayor of the central Arab city of Tira, said the Arab-Israeli society “tried protests, strikes and marches — it’s like treading water. We saw no results. The only option left is to shut everything down and stop participating in anything.”Jamal Zahalka, head of the High Follow-Up Committee for Arab Citizens of Israel, lashed out at National Security Minister, Itamar Ben-Gvir, following the triple homicide. “The number of victims has risen during Ben-Gvir’s term. I don’t understand how someone who supported the slogan ‘Death to Arabs’ can serve as minister,” he said. Families of victims have also criticised police for failing to bring the perpetrators to justice. Walid Hamouda, whose son was killed in 2024, told Israeli newspaper Ynet: “Every time I ask the police about my son’s murder case, the answer is always unclear.”“If a Jewish engineer had been murdered, we would have seen rapid developments. We live in a constant state of anxiety after every killing. When engineers, doctors, sheikhs, children and women are murdered, it means security has vanished,” he added. Last year 252 Arab-Israelis were killed in crime-related incidents, marking a record high number. But with 33 people killed in a month, 2026 is fast on track to beat that record.
