Musk Predicts Tesla Will Start Selling Humanoid Robots to Consumers ‘Next Year’

Billionaire Elon Musk predicts that Tesla’s Optimus humanoid robot will be available to the public next year, and that robots will eventually outnumber humans. Speaking at the World Economic Forum at Davos, Mr. Musk predicted that humanoid robotics will “advance very quickly.”He said that Tesla’s Optimus robots are already performing “simple tasks” in factories, but that by the end of this year, they will be “doing more complex tasks.”“And probably sometime next year … by the end of next year, I think we’ll be selling humanoid robots to the public,” he said. “That’s when we’re confident that it’s very high reliability, very high safety, and the range of functionality is also very high, you can basically ask it to do anything you’d like.”Mr. Musk predicted that “humanoid robots would become “ubiquitous” and that “everyone on earth is going to have one and want one.”“Who wouldn’t want a robot to — assuming it’s very safe — watch over your kids, take care of your pet?” he asked. “There aren’t enough young people to take care of the old people. So, if you had a robot that could take care of and protect an elderly parent, that would be great.”He also predicted that eventually there would be “more robots than people.”Mr. Musk said last year that he believes Tesla’s Optimus robots will “eliminate poverty.”“People often talk about eliminating poverty, giving everyone amazing medical care,” Mr. Musk said in November. “There’s actually only one way to do that, and that’s with the Optimus robot. Optimus will actually eliminate poverty.”He predicted that the Optimus robots would increase the global economy by at least a factor of 10, and that they would make work “optional” for humans.The investment bank Morgan Stanley estimates that the humanoid robot market could be worth more than $5 trillion by 2050.Tesla has some competition on the way. In October, tech company 1X opened up pre-orders for its NEO humanoid robot. 1X says its robot can perform “everyday tasks” and “household chores” while also bringing “useful insight into every conversation.”The NEO robot can be purchased for $20,000. The company also offers a $499 a month subscription for NEO.1X says deliveries of its robots will begin this year. There have been some safety concerns associated with other humanoid robots. In a federal lawsuit, a fired safety engineer sued his former employer, Figure AI, alleging that the company ignored his concerns that it was rushing a robot to market that could move with “superhuman speed” and inflict “severe” injuries on humans. Figure AI has called the allegations “falsehoods” and said it intends to disprove them in court.
