DiNapoli’s Office Falls Victim To E-Mail Fraud

The State Comptroller, Thomas DiNapoli, warned this week that phony e-mails claiming to be from the State Comptroller Office of Unclaimed Funds were being sent to people across the country. The e-mails, which purport to be from Mr. DiNapoli himself, tell their recipients that they have inherited a large sum of money and ask them to call a phone number to claim it.
“This is a scam,” said Mr. Di-Napoli, who urged those who received the e-mail not to reply , but contact his office instead. “We’ve referred this matter to federal law enforcement officials,” he added. “This is a reminder that no one should ever share personal information without verifying the legitimacy of the person asking for that information.”
