Pace University’s student presence is growing in Lower Manhattan, as the school is slated to christen a new dorm Thursday that adds 500 students to the area.

Mirroring a trend downtown of conversions from commercial space to residential, the new dorm is a former office building on John and William Streets.

Pace’s desire for an increased presence in Manhattan comes as colleges throughout the city, saying they are starved for space, are pushing for major expansions.

Columbia is pushing a 17-acre expansion into West Harlem, New York University has said it could increase its physical presence by one-third over the next 25 years, and Fordham University is attempting to triple the size of its Lincoln Center campus.
