A young woman visiting the city from Scotland was struck and killed on the Bowery early yesterday morning as she was exiting a cab, police said.
The woman, identified by police as Julia Thomson, 24, was crossing the Bowery eastbound near East 4th Street at around 4:30 a.m. when she was hit by a dark colored Mercedes headed southbound. The driver of the Mercedes fled the scene, but a mirror from the car was found at the scene.
Ms. Thomson had been staying long term in an apartment near the scene of the accident, police said. She was taken to St. Vincent’s hospital, where she died.
Police said they traced the car to Queens, where they arrested a suspect, Tenzing Bhutai, 21, of Forest Hills. Police said he is the owner of the Mercedes.
Mr. Bhutai, of Forest Hills, has been charged with leaving the scene of an accident and driving while under the influence of alcohol.
