WELCOME TO THE FUTURE This penthouse in The Future condominium boasts sweeping views of the East River, the skyline, and six bridges from its bay windows and private balcony. The sale raised the bar for property values in the building, especially for an apartment with one bathroom.
The sole broker, Paul Zumoff of the Corcoran Group, sold a similar apartment on a lower floor for $500,000 last year. This penthouse marked his 68th sale in the building. “This is the first time people are starting to pull that kind of money out of their pockets for this area,” Mr. Zumoff said.
The apartment has one bedroom and a skylit space that can be used either as a home office or guest bedroom on the living room’s mezzanine half-level. The additional half-level brings the total usable square footage to approximately 849. Ten-foot high glass windows wrap the walls. The sun-drenched corner living room has postcard skyline views, with a 22-foot barrel vaulted ceiling, two skylights, built-ins, and a spiral staircase. An oversize kitchen has windows, granite countertops, and a dishwasher. The full bathroom features Italian marble, and the apartment also has parquet floors and storage space.
The apartment is one of five penthouses in the building, which sits atop a 24-hour Food Emporium and parking garage. Amenities in this doorman building include a concierge, sundeck, fitness center with sauna, and a children’s playroom. The complex, which was renovated in the early 1990s, is two blocks from a stop on the 6 train.
The buyer, a Wall Street bachelor in the technology field, was drawn to the view. He plans to renovate the entire apartment. The seller got married recently and moved to Long Island.
