OHIO ST. ROUTS OKLAHOMA ST. IN ALAMO BOWL

Justin Zwick stepped in for the suspended Troy Smith and threw for 189 yards and a touchdown, and Ted Ginn Jr. and Lydell Ross each scored, leading no. 24 Ohio State to a 33-7 victory over Oklahoma State in the Alamo Bowl last night.

Ginn caught six passes for 78 yards and rushed for another 51 yards and a touchdown. The Buckeyes took advantage of two early turnovers by Oklahoma State, and never let the Cowboys get anything going offensively.

KLATT LEADS COLORADO OVER UTEP IN HOUSTON BOWL

Joel Klatt threw for 333 yards and two touchdowns and Mason Crosby kicked four field goals, leading Colorado to a 33-28 victory over Texas-El Paso (8-4) in the Houston Bowl last night.

Klatt keyed a fourth-quarter comeback by the Buffaloes (8-5), who tried to keep pace with UTEP, which is ranked eighth in the nation in scoring offense. Colorado led 3-0 midway through the first quarter and trailed until seizing the lead late in the game.

Facing a fourth-and-3 at its own 35, Colorado punter John Torp raced 22 yards around the left end on a fake punt for the first down. Two plays later, Klatt threw a 39-yard touchdown pass to Evan Judge for the go-ahead score with 8:43 left.

SYRACUSE FIRES PASQUALONI

Syracuse fired football coach Paul Pasqualoni yesterday, eight days after a 37-point loss in a bowl game – and less than a month after giving him a vote of confidence.

Chancellor Nancy Cantor announced December 6 that Pasqualoni would return for his 15th season with Syracuse, but 11 days later Daryl Gross was hired as athletic director and the Orange’s humbling 51-14 loss to Georgia Tech in the Champs Sports Bowl apparently sealed Pasqualoni’s fate. The decision to fire Pasqualoni was made by Gross.

Pasqualoni was 107-59-1 and 6-3 in bowl games at Syracuse. But the Orange struggled the last three years after going 10-3 and finishing 14th in the nation in 2001. Pasqualoni departs as the second-winningest coach in school history.

TEXAS GIVES BROWN 10-YEAR DEAL

Football coach Mack Brown and Texas agreed to a 10-year contract worth more than $25 million that would keep him at the university through 2014.The new deal needs approval from the school’s board of regents.

The new contract would boost Brown’s $2.06 million annual salary by $100,000 in the first year, with additional $100,000 raises each year. Brown has led Texas to four straight seasons with at least 10 victories and is 69-19 in Austin. He has never won a conference title in 21 seasons as a head coach. The Rose Bowl will be the first Bowl Championship Series appearance for the Longhorns (10-1).

SAN JOSE STATE HIRES TOMEY AS COACH

Dick Tomey became San Jose State’s new head football coach yesterday, taking the sidelines of his third college program. The Spartans went 14-3 in the past four seasons under Fitz Hill before his resignation last month. Tomey went 158-110-7 in 24 seasons at Hawaii and Arizona.

PRO FOOTBALL

WOODSON ANNOUNCES RETIREMENT

Five-time Pro Bowl safety Darren Woodson, the Cowboys’ all-time leading tackler, officially announced his retirement yesterday.

The 35-year-old Woodson, who has missed the entire 2004 season with a back injury, has amassed 1,350 tackles, including 787 solo and 11 sacks, to go with 23 interceptions in a career that began in 1992. He was an integral part of the secondary as Dallas established a dynasty with additional Super Bowl victories in the 1993 and 1995 seasons.

YANKEES FINALIZE CONTRACT WITH WRIGHT

Free agent Jaret Wright and the Yankees finalized a $21 million, three-year contract yesterday, announcing the deal on the pitcher’s 29th birthday. Wright was 15-8 with a 3.28 ERA for Atlanta last season, then lost both of his playoff starts against Houston. Because he twice had surgery on his right shoulder, the Yankees put him through an extensive physical.

D.C. MAYOR SIGNS DEAL FOR BALLPARK

Washington, D.C. Mayor Anthony A. Williams signed legislation yesterday to bring baseball back to the nation’s capital. His signature came after weeks of political wrangling as several members of the District of Columbia Council balked at an earlier plan to finance a new stadium.

Supporters and opponents of building a new, publicly financed stadium for the Washington-bound Montreal Expos watched officials amend their initial deal with Major League Baseball to include private financing. Baseball officials responded by suspending the team’s promotional and business operations. So a deal was struck that would allow some private financing. MLB and the city also agreed to split the price of insurance to cover cost overruns or construction delays.

The legislation clears the way to renovate RFK Stadium, where the Nationals will play beginning in 2005. It also allows the city to sell up to $584 million in bonds for construction of a 41,000-seat stadium.

COLLEGE BASKETBALL

WISCONSIN EXTENDS HOME WIN STREAK TO 36

Alando Tucker scored 21 points and Wisconsin stifled no. 18 Alabama’s high-powered offense in a 72-62 win last night that extended the nation’s longest home winning streak to 36 games.

The Badgers (9-2) took a 33-23 halftime lead behind the Big 10’s best defense. Alabama, the SEC’s leading offense, scored on seven straight possessions to start the second half, cutting the lead 42-37. But the Crimson Tide (10-2) went scoreless for almost three minutes after Ronald Steele’s basket cut the lead to 54-46 with 6:18 left. Tucker’s 3-pointer gave the Badgers a 65-48 lead, their biggest of the game, and Wisconsin cruised from there.

BELARUS DOWNS U.S. AT JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIPS

The United States was unable to rally from a four-goal deficit and lost 5-3 to Belarus in pool play of the International Ice Hockey Federation World Junior Hockey Championship last night, the Americans’ first loss since in the tournament in two years.

The loss dropped the U.S. to 2-1 in the group that includes Russia (2-1),the Czech Republic (2-1) Switzerland (1-2) and Belarus (1-3). In other games yesterday, the Czech Republic beat Switzerland 5-2, Finland rallied to defeat Sweden 5-4, and Slovakia defeated Germany 5-0.
