UN’s Francesca Albanese Tells the West To Stop Arming Ukraine and Blames NATO For the War

The United Nations Rapporteur for the Palestinian Territories, Francesca Albanese, says she thinks the West should stop sending weapons to Ukraine.Ms. Albanese has faced criticism and calls for her dismissal over her comments about Israel, claiming in February that the Jewish state is a “common enemy” of “humanity.”The rapporteur spoke at Open Festival, organized by an Italian newspaper, Open, amid concerns that Russia’s leader, Vladimir Putin, is planning an escalation of his war against Ukraine.“I agree with those who think that we must stop sending weapons to Ukraine and bring the discussion back within the political space,” Ms. Albanese said as she admitted she does not have “the solution for the end of the war.”Ms. Albanese also said she believes there is a “political calculation that is not born in Europe, but within NATO, led by the United States” that it is “convenient to have a weak Europe” and that is why the war in Ukraine has not ended. Ms. Albanese he said she believes the war is being “exploited to justify” a notion that “we are already at war and it is a hybrid war.”The latter part of Ms. Albanese’s comment comes as European leaders have been raising the alarm about Russia carrying out “hybrid” attacks — such as cyberattacks or sabotage. Last week, the president of France, Emmanuel Macron, said that he ordered the government to create a plan to defend critical infrastructure from such attacks. Poland’s prime minister, Donald Tusk, recently warned that he believes Russia may be planning drone or missile strikes against countries on NATO’s eastern flank. And Germany has blamed Russia for an attempted drone attack at its Leipzig/Halle Airport in August. Ms. Albanese has said Russia’s invasion of Ukraine is unlawful. However, she has previously been accused of siding with autocratic regimes. In 2024, she shared a post from a left-wing writer, Alon Mizrahi, who suggested that America was not supporting the Syrian dictator, Bashar al-Assad, against a rebel offensive that toppled his regime because he played a “critical role” in “maintaining Syria’s integrity and political independence.”Ms. Albanese wrote that Mr. Mizrahi was “prescient.” She later wrote that she was “profoundly” and “painfully aware of the endless horrors and tragedies” the Syrian people faced under the Assad regime. She tried to clarify her statement, writing that her use of the“term ‘prescient’ was in reference to Alon’s point on the little value some Western countries attach to human rights and democracy.”Ms. Albanese has repeatedly accused Israel of carrying out a genocide. Her pinned post on X is a message about a rapper, Macklemore, stating that he had been kicked off pop singer Ed Sheeran’s tour due to his anti-Israel comments. Ms. Albanese claimed that people who “speak up for Palestine” may be “arrested or sanctioned” and have their voices “criminalized.”
