With Angry Rhetoric Soaring, the ‘Luigi Left’ Finds a New Champion in Shooter at White House Correspondents’ Dinner

It didn’t take long for the camaraderie that embodied the annual White House Correspondents’ Dinner to evaporate after thousands of individuals online cheered President Trump’s would-be assassin and compared him favorably to another alleged shooter, Luigi Mangione.Shortly after the Saturday night shooting, President Trump expressed support for the press corps that he has openly and frequently disdained. He encouraged members of the nation’s premiere media association to organize a quick redo of the annual black-tie fête affectionately known as Washington’s “Nerd Prom.”But the goodwill ended shortly after the release of details about the alleged shooter, Cole Tomas Allen. Social media warriors and activists who had long held the president in low esteem praised Mr. Allen for his convictions and drew similarities between him and Mr. Mangione, the alleged killer of United Health Care CEO Brian Thompson. “From Luigi Mangione to Cole Allen, these shooters aren’t the antisocial loners of media imagination … smart, well-liked, often idealistic … no prior criminal record … take pains to avoid bystander casualties..they share one conviction: that the political system has failed completely & someone has to act,” wrote a commenter on the liberal social media alternative to X, BlueSky. “Luigi Mangione, Tyler Robinson, and Cole Allen were not radicals. They had no party, no theory of history. They were ‘normies’ who reached a breaking point and acted. They could no longer tolerate the intolerable. Radicalism didn’t produce them. Normalcy did,” added a Washington, D.C., teacher, Scott Patrick, who included the man accused of assassinating Turning Point USA Founder Charlie Kirk in his analysis.Political violence began long before last weekend. Assassinations are as old as time and partisans have often justified if not condoned them. But in this era of social media disinformation and with a president known for pushing people’s buttons, radical behavior is gaining in fashion and glory.Young, telegenic men fed up by a perceived broken system are helping to fuel the trend. Like Mr. Mangione, Mr. Allen is an educated computer scientist from a successful, close-knit family. Like Mr. Mangione, Mr. Allen crafted a clear exposition of his actions, which he sent to his family minutes before the attack. Like Mr. Mangione, Mr. Allen, who frequently reposted progressive talking points on BlueSky under the pseudonym Coldforce, gained fans among similarly disgruntled Americans.“A school teacher in California is the one that took a shot at Donald,” an ER nurse and anti-ICE organizer, Vincent Hawkins, said at a rally in support of Mr. Allen outside the Portland ICE facility Sunday morning. “We’ll have that school teacher’s legal GoFundMe account here soon. I’m sure it’ll hit $10 million, and we’ll get Luigi’s team on it.” “I think Cole might get more commissary credits than Luigi. Sympathetic character,” wrote a BlueSky poster. Like Mr. Mangione, Mr. Allen offered an apology in his manifesto, expressed support for federal law enforcement, and claimed that he had been left with no choice. “The United States of America are ruled by the law, not by any one or several people. In so far as representatives and judges do not follow the law, no one is required to yield them anything so unlawfully ordered,” Mr. Allen wrote, according to excerpts obtained by media outlets. In his 1,052-word explanation, the 31-year-old master of computer science and one-time education preparation company teacher-of-the-month shared his “rules of engagement” — he wanted to target administration officials, save FBI Director Kash Patel, and would try to avoid hitting National Guard and Metro Police, hotel workers, and guests. A 2024 supporter of Kamala Harris’s presidential campaign, Mr. Allen used familiar language to accuse Mr. Trump of being a “fascist convicted felon.” He called the president’s Cabinet members Russian assets and claimed he stole the 2024 election. He said that as an American he could no longer “permit a pedophile, rapist, and traitor to coat my hands with his crimes.” Asked about those words by 60 Minutes interviewer Norah O’Donnell on Sunday evening, President Trump, who just a night earlier had asked “all Americans to recommit with their hearts to resolve our differences peacefully,” responded with the customary invective that drives his critics mad.“I was waiting for you to read that because I knew you would because you’re horrible people. Horrible people,” he said, adding, “You should be ashamed of yourself reading that because I’m not any of those things.”The pointed retort will do little to soften the gruff discourse that has grown routine in American politics since the president’s first run at office in 2015. Instead, say observers, it raises the heat among Mr. Trump’s opponents, who responsively coarsen their rhetoric and, intentionally or otherwise, instigate retaliation. “Luigi Leftism is the inevitable result of treating politics like a holy war,” said social media personality Josie Glabach, better known as The Red Headed Libertarian.“Most on the Left believe the murder of Donald Trump is at least partially justifiable. Political violence “has always been there.” But he accused Democrats of encouraging hate. “I do think it’s very dangerous. I think it’s very dangerous for the country,” he said.Departing from business as usual, over the weekend several Democrats called for turning down the rhetorical temperature.“Political violence has become all too prevalent in America. I’m grateful for the swift response from law enforcement at White House Correspondents’ Dinner,” Minnesota’s governor, Tim Walz, said before being nudged about his past statement that “No one has ever been more dangerous to this country than Donald Trump, and he is a fascist to his core.”“There will be ample time to vigorously debate the issues of the day.Now is a time to unify,” Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, whom Mr. Trump has dismissively called a “low IQ individual,” wrote on X. Saying that “violence is never the answer,” Mr. Jeffries who stood in front of a poster last week that showed Mr. Trump with the words, “Maximum Warfare: Everywhere, All the Time,” added that Democrats will never compromise their presumed high ground.“America will not be lectured about civility by far right extremists in Congress. Particularly those who provide aid and comfort to hundreds of violent rioters who brutally beat police officers on January 6,” Mr. Jeffries wrote, referencing the riot on Capitol Hill following Mr. Trump’s 2020 re-election loss.
