American Journalist Snatched Off the Street in Baghdad; Iran-Backed Militia Suspected

An American freelance journalist was abducted by armed men in the heart of Baghdad on Tuesday evening, snatched near one of the Iraqi capital’s most prominent streets in broad operational view of the city’s security forces — and multiple Baghdad-based sources tell the New York Sun that the Iran-backed militia Kataib Hezbollah is believed to be behind the kidnapping.“They are scum terrorists,” one Iraqi-American investigator tells the Sun. “But the government is weak and unable to confront them.”Shelly Kittleson, a 49-year-old Wisconsin native and veteran war correspondent who has contributed to Al-Monitor, Foreign Policy, and The National, reporting from the frontlines on the Islamic State as well as on pro-Iran militias in Iraq, was taken by a group of unidentified armed men near the Baghdad Hotel on Al-Saadoun Street on Tuesday afternoon.Iraq’s Interior Ministry confirmed that specialized units launched an immediate operation based on intelligence tracking and field follow-up, pursuing a vehicle used in the kidnapping that was overturned as the suspects attempted to flee. One suspect, a Baghdad official confirmed to the Sun, was arrested, and a vehicle was seized.“One of them crashed when they were trying to run away to Babylon,” the official said, referring to the ancient city 60 miles from the Iraqi capital and underscoring that the suspect belonged to the Iranian-backed, rogue militia.As of late Tuesday afternoon, Ms. Kittleson’s whereabouts remained unknown.A United States official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the State Department was aware of Ms. Kittleson’s kidnapping and was working with the Iraqi government to secure her release. Trump administration sources confirmed they had been aware of the threat against her and had advised against travel to Iraq.A militia built on Tehran’s payrollThe suspected hand behind the abduction — Kataib Hezbollah, or the Brigades of the Party of God — is no fringe actor. Described as the premier militia in Iraq, the group operates under Iran’s direct command and fields a wide range of cells responsible for kinetic, media, and social operations, some bankrolled by the Iraqi state.Kataib Hezbollah is considered a direct subordinate to the IRGC’s Quds Force. It operates under its instructions and guidance, partially funded by Iran alongside funding it receives from the Iraqi government since 2018.The group seeks to establish an Iran-aligned government in Iraq, expel American forces from the country, and advance the regional and international interests of Iran in Iraq and beyond. It has been responsible for killing hundreds of United States soldiers. The militia enjoys Iranian funding, armament, and training. It aims to dominate Iraq’s political scene in a manner that aligns with its pro-Iranian orientations — with stated goals including securing a political majority capable of bringing about fundamental changes to the Iraqi constitution.Its financing, however, goes beyond Tehran’s direct transfers. Kataib Hezbollah has reportedly secured additional funding through kidnap-and-ransom operations, including taking more than two dozen people hostage in December 2015, among them Qatari royals, and releasing them more than a year later in exchange for a large payout.Qatari officials reportedly paid $25 million out of a $150 million ransom to the group after it was discovered they had kidnapped a member of the royal family.“The militia group’s goal is not money necessarily, but leverage,” one of the Baghdad sources reiterated. Political strategist John Thomas cautioned that “Kataib Hezbollah is almost certainly demanding a high-value prisoner swap plus sanctions relief.”“With U.S.–Iran tensions elevated after the recent strikes, Washington actually holds stronger leverage. The group knows Trump won’t pay ransom or weaken sanctions to free one American,” he told the Sun. “Hostage-taking only works when America looks weak, and right now Tehran’s proxies are feeling the heat.”A pattern of Western hostagesTuesday’s abduction did not occur in a vacuum. The kidnapping recalls that of Russian-Israeli researcher Elizabeth Tsurkov, seized at a Baghdad cafe in March 2023 and held hostage by Kataib Hezbollah for 903 days before she was freed under a deal brokered by the United States. In captivity, Tsurkov reported sexual abuse and other forms of torture.The group has also engaged in extrajudicial killings, abductions, and forced disappearances of Sunni men and boys, and during the Tishreen protests in Iraq, participated in the kidnapping, torture, and killing of demonstrators protesting government corruption and Iranian influence. In January 2026, Kataib Hezbollah called for its fighters around the world to prepare to fight on behalf of the Iranian regime amid the intensifying conflict with the United States.The wider threat environment has been deteriorating steadily. The United States Embassy in Baghdad warned that Iran and Iran-aligned terrorist militias have attacked commercial airports and hotels frequented by foreigners, and that terrorist militias may attempt to kidnap Americans, urging all United States citizens to leave Iraq immediately.Ms. Kittleson, as depicted by those who know her, is a tenacious but kind writer who cares deeply for those she covers and has spent years based in Baghdad, and she stayed in the embattled country to continue her journalism.Her abduction lands at a volatile moment as the war against Iran continues to gain momentum.“We have no problem saying we are backed by Iran and funded by Iran,” one high-ranking Kataib Hezbollah member told this reporter from Baghdad three years ago. “We will do what is necessary for them.”
