Approval of Supreme Court Hits Record Low as Doubts Rise Among Republicans

Approval of the Supreme Court has reached a record low since President Trump reentered the White House, with most of the slippage registered among members of the president’s own party.A Marquette Law School poll released Thursday found 57 percent of American adults disapprove of the court, with approval slipping by three percentage points among both Republicans and Democrats in the past month. Overall, however, Republicans are more likely to approve of the way the court is handling its job.The survey found Republican support at 71 percent, down from 84 percent at the start of Mr. Trump’s second term. Democratic approval of the court has remained in a narrow range around 20 percent since July 2025. Approval among independents rose to 36 percent, up from a low of 26 percent in January.The perception that the court has sided with the Trump administration rose by five points in the poll to 60 percent. Among Democrats, 75 percent say the justices are far more likely to side with the administration while only 46 percent of Republicans agree. A slight majority of Republicans, 54 percent, say the high court has rarely or never ruled in favor of the administration.A majority of adults still see the justices as more motivated by politics than by law, but there was a stark divide between members of the major parties. A majority of Democrats and independents believe justices are mainly motivated by politics while most Republicans say the justices are mainly motivated by the law.Respondents have strong views but admitt to not paying too much attention to the court. Asked how much they had heard or read about the court in the past month, 61 percent said a little and 15 percent said nothing at all.The poll found even fewer knew much about proposals to alter the court, though awareness was higher among people who watch the right-wing Newsmax and left-wing MS Now. Democrats this month revived a proposal to expand the number of justices on the bench to 13, although the proposal has almost no chance of passing Congress and being approved by President Trump. Consumers relying for news on national newspapers, the major broadcast networks, or social media were far less likely to have heard much about proposals to change the makeup of the court.There is broad, bipartisan support on some Supreme Court issues. Ninety one percent of Republicans and Democrats support enforcing a strict ethics code for justices. A majority also support term limits for justices. with 88 percent of Democrats, 75 percent of independents, and 71 percent of Republicans signaling support for fixed terms for justices.The polling took place just after the Supreme Court allowed construction to continue on Mr. Trump’s White House ballroom project but polling was completed before the recent Supreme Court decision against the Trump administration’s plan to require the United States Postal Service to screen names on absentee ballots against a list of registered voters.The survey was conducted September 2 through 9 and involved interviews with 1,023 adults nationwide. The authors say the margin of error was plus or minus 3.3 percentage points.
