At 93, One Lifelong Fan Relishes UConn’s Dual Final Four Dream

Bob Schnieder, who turns 93 next week, has a busy weekend planned. He’ll be sitting in front of a television in Trumbull, Connecticut, watching his beloved UConn men’s and women’s basketball teams compete in their respective Final Fours.For the last 20 years, Mr. Schneider has been a season-ticket holder to the men’s and women’s basketball games in Storrs, Connecticut, where the championship banners of the two Huskies programs stretch across generations. The men and women have combined for 18 national championships, 12 for the women and six for the men.The school hopes to add to the collection this weekend. The top-seeded women’s team, unbeaten in 38 games, takes on No.1 seed South Carolina (35-3) Friday night at Phoenix with the winner advancing to Sunday’s national championship game against the victor in Friday’s semifinal between Texas (35-3) and UCLA (35-1) — both No.1 seeds.The UConn men’s team, 33-5 and seeded No. 2, plays No. 3 seed Illinois (28-8) in the men’s semifinal on Saturday at Indianapolis, followed by Michigan (35-3) vs. Arizona (36-2), two No. 1 seeds, in the other semifinal. The winners meet for the national championship on Monday.This is the sixth time the UConn men’s and women’s teams have reached the Final Four in the same season with both teams winning in 2004 and 2014. Together, they form something no other school in modern college basketball can claim with quite the same authority, a dual empire.In an era defined by transfer portals and NIL money, UConn has managed to sustain excellence on both sides of the sport. The men’s and women’s programs are not merely successful, they are intertwined, feeding off each other’s expectations, infrastructure and identity. The result is a basketball ecosystem that has turned a small New England campus into the center of college basketball.“There are more than 350 Division 1 college basketball programs,” Mr. Schnieder tells The New York Sun. “To have two teams in the Final Four from a school that’s in the boonies is always a remarkable achievement.”Mr. Schneider has attended nine Final Fours involving UConn, but won’t travel this weekend. “Someone once told me when you get older everything gets further away,” he joked.Instead, he’ll watch the games on television and feel like he’s in Gampel Pavilion. “The games are always exciting because you have the cheerleaders and the bands and they’re college kids, which is always a bit unpredictable,” he said. “It’s like going back 50 years ago and you’re living it again. It’s special.”Mr. Schneider joins the chorus of those who credit coaching for UConn’s sustained success in both programs. Geno Auriemma, the Huskies head women’s coach for four decades, is making his 25th Final Four appearance and is the architect of all 12 national titles. He built his program on accountability and precision. His teams are known for their execution as much as their talent, a culture where details matter and complacency is never accepted.“He’s like John Wooden when he ruled the men’s side for 20 years,” Mr. Schneider said. “The kids have to conform 100 percent to his program. If they don’t, they’re gone.”Danny Hurley, who is seeking his third men’s national title in four years, brings an edge shaped by his upbringing as a coach’s son and career spent rebuilding programs. His intensity is more visible, his sideline demeanor more combustible than that of Mr. Auriemma.Much has been made of Mr. Hurley pressing his forehead against the head of an official, Roger Ayers, in a spontaneous reaction to UConn’s thrilling win over Duke to reach the Final Four. He was ejected from a game a few weeks earlier after receiving two technical fouls for berating a referee. But beneath that fire lies a similar insistence on discipline and player development.Both coaches demand that players adapt to their programs, not the other way around. And both have created environments where winning is not celebrated as an achievement but expected.“College sports is all about coaching,” Mr. Schneider said. “Both of the UConn coaches are great at making adjustments. A kid can score 18 points in the first half against them, and get shut off in the second half. It’s a chess game.”Maintaining a steady stream of talent helps.The pipeline from UConn to professional basketball has become one of the most reliable in the sport. On the men’s side, the program boasts an elite lineage that includes Hall of Famer Ray Allen, Rudy Gay, Kemba Walker, Richard Hamilton, Stephon Castle, Donovan Clingan, and others.On the women’s side the program has produced generational talent such as Paige Bueckers, who led the Huskies to the national title last year, Naphessa Collier, Diana Taurasi, Brenna Stewart, Maya Moore, Tina Charles, Sue Bird and Rebecca Lobo.This season’s men’s team is led by Tarris Reed Jr. The senior center from St. Louis leads the team in scoring (14.7 points per game), rebounding (8.8) and blocks (2.1). He is one of five players who averaged double figures in scoring, illustrating the balanced approach the Huskies have followed this season.“The ’23 and ’24 teams, they just smashed everybody,” Mr. Hurley said of his back-to-back national titles. “But we’ve had to win a lot of close games throughout [this] year. It’s a resilient team that’s got a lot of confidence in close, late games.”The defending women’s national champions are led by sophomore forward Sara Strong, the 2026 winner of the Naismith Trophy, honoring the most outstanding women’s college basketball player. A native of Durham, North Carolina, Ms. Strong leads the top-ranked Huskies in points (18.6), rebounds (7.6), blocks (1.6) and steals (3.4). Azzi Fudd, a graduate student from Arlington, Virginia, is also a key contributor averaging 17.5 points.“This team, no matter what I throw at them, they always just go, ‘All right, we got this.’ That’s why I’m happy for them,” Mr. Auriemma said. “They do put up with a lot every day in practice, and it’s made them who they are right now.”
