Resurgent Spider-Man Breaks the Blockbuster Box Office Slump

‘“Spider-Man: Brand New Day” from Sony Pictures is swinging to the biggest opening weekend in American history by embracing Marvel Comics and its fans. Audiences are sending a message: It’s not superheroes they’re fatigued by, but filmmakers that have other priorities than delivering stories worth the price of admission.“Brand New Day” posted a record $165 million in its opening day on Friday, crushing the inflation-adjusted $120.5 million of 2019’s “Avengers: Endgame.” Last month’s “Supergirl,” from rival D.C. Comics, earned just $72 million in its entire domestic run.The 30-year-old actor, Tom Holland, portrays a more mature and world-wearier version of the webslinger. Where Supergirl was criticized for portraying the character as depressing, alcoholic, and unheroic, Spidey sacrifices for the benefit of others. At one point, Spider-Man is sitting in a bodega as Peter Parker when his former best-friend, Jacob Batalon as Ned Leeds, enters. There’s no tearful reunion since — to save the world in the previous film, “Spider-Man: No Way Home” — memories of the man behind the mask have been erased. In comics, background art often offers subtle cues. “Brand New Day” employs this tool, putting a note on the bodega’s wall behind Parker. “No credit given,” it reads. “Don’t ask.” It’s a message to the main character that his sacrifice won’t be rewarded or even acknowledged.Mr. Holland’s wife, Zendaya Coleman, plays Parker’s former girlfriend, Mary Jane “M.J.” Watson. He spends the film coming to terms with the fact that she has no memory of their falling in love. The actors display a range that tugs all the right heartstrings.Tom Holland and Zendaya in ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day.’ Sony PicturesPractical effects, and the real costume that Mr. Holland wears, bring the same realism to fantastic situations. It’s a lesson to filmmakers that CGI and green screens ought to be reserved for things that can’t be rendered with practical effects. The “Brand New Day” director, Destin Daniel Cretton, renders Spider-Man swinging down the avenues of New York City from fresh angles. The result is infusing a superhuman ability that had become as mundane as a subway ride with a fresh sense of wonder.Sony avoids the recent trope of turning heroes into buffoons, deconstructing them, or reducing them to sidekicks in their own films. Parker’s central struggle is between accepting that he must go it alone after losing everyone he cares about and the “friendly neighborhood Spider-Man’s” desire for companionship.Moviegoers who know Spider-Man outside the pages of the comic books will get what they expect in “Brand New Day.” But there’s plenty to please fans who have followed the character’s adventures page by page, panel after panel, since his debut in 1962.The writer, Stan Lee, and artist, Steve Ditko, broke the superhero mold with Spider-Man. They hoped to avoid confusion with Superman by adding a hyphen to their character’s name. Peter Parker isn’t a godlike, confident “Boys Scout” like the Man of Steel. He’s a flawed teenager, blessed and cursed with great power.Mr. Holland is as talented and likable as any actor to don Superman’s cape. But “Brand New Day” embraces Spider-Man’s character while D.C. struggles to depict their big gun for cynical modern audiences. It’s a welcome break from studios that sees franchises as “intellectual properties” to be mined or “platforms” for political commentary.Florence Pugh, Tom Holland, Zendaya, and Marisa Tomei at the ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ premiere at London on July 29. McCormack/Getty ImagesAs illustrated by Filmthusiast on Instagram, many original covers from the various Spider-Man comics are replicated in “Brand New Day.” That doesn’t mean the film is just fan service, as Mr. Holland told Quotable in an interview with Ms. Coleman and Mr. Batalon.Mr. Holland said they’d seen “loads of different cuts of this movie,” taking “notes from all of the random people” after test screenings only to find “it wasn’t quite what we wanted as the creatives.” Taking the care to listen while having your own vision makes “Brand New Day” a throwback to what Hollywood does best.Expect “Avengers: Doomsday,” being released a week before Christmas, to get a major boost from the momentum of “Brand New Day, predicted to surpass $2 billion worldwide. “With great power,” Spidey’s maxim states, “comes great responsibility,” and — on the strength of its cast and production team — great box office numbers rewarding a thrilling cinematic experience.
