California Republicans Criticize Newsom for Spending Millions of Taxpayer Dollars on State ‘Brand Campaign’

Governor Gavin Newsom plans to spend millions of taxpayer dollars for an advertising campaign to fight “negative narratives amplified online and in partisan media” about California, but Republican state lawmakers are criticizing it as self-promotion ahead of a presumptive 2028 presidential run.Mr. Newsom’s Office of Business and Economic Development put out a request last month for companies to come up with a brand campaign designed to “dispel myths driven by misinformation and political rhetoric” about California.“These portrayals frequently oversimplify complex issues, dismiss major successes, and ignore fundamental economic facts,” according to a request for proposal statement put out by the office. “At a time when misinformation distorts public understanding, California’s economic narrative must be anchored in truth and supported by clear, data-backed storytelling that underscores the state’s enduring strengths.”Firms interested in the $19 million contract have until Friday to submit ideas for an ad campaign that would target “top tier” national media outlets and influencers. At least $14 million of that money would be designated for paid ads. The campaign would run through the end of Mr. Newsom’s term in December.California’s crime, budget concerns, and claims of residents fleeing the state due to high taxes have been highlighted in conservative media outlets. Negative portrayals of the state could dent Mr. Newsom’s chances in a national election. Republican lawmakers are criticizing the plan. “This is unquestionably promoting Gavin Newsom, this is unquestionably part of his presidential campaign,” State Senator Roger Niello told KCRA-TV.“This is irresponsible, it looks like corruption and it looks like he’s cutting a deal right now before he kicks off his next campaign to be the president of the United States and it’s wrong,” Assemblyman David Tangipa told the outlet.Mr. Newsom has been trying to boost his national image as a foil to President Trump. He even traveled to the World Economic Forum’s annual meeting at Davos, Switzerland, in January to bash Mr. Trump.Mr. Newsom also started his own podcast last year with several prominent conservatives among his guests, including Charlie Kirk, Steve Bannon, and Ben Shapiro.A nationwide book tour Mr. Newsom started last month for his memoir, “Young Man in a Hurry,” included stops in key states if he runs for the White House. A representative from the governor’s office disputes that the campaign is to boost Mr. Newsom. They said he would not be featured in any advertisements.A $220 million advertising campaign that prominently featured Kristi Noem may have led to her removal as Homeland Security Secretary after criticism from Republicans in Congress.
