California Voters to Decide on Contentious Voter ID and Citizenship Requirements This November

California voters will head to the polls this November to decide on a Republican-backed ballot initiative that would mandate voter identification and proof of citizenship to cast a ballot in the deep-blue state. The measure officially qualified for the ballot on Friday after organizers submitted more than 960,000 valid signatures, surpassing the roughly 875,000 required. Led by a San Diego Republican Assemblymember, Carl DeMaio, the initiative seeks to overhaul the state’s current election procedures.“Voters will be able to restore election integrity in our state, citizenship verification, auditing voter rolls, and, yes, requiring ID to vote,” Mr. DeMaio said in a social media video celebrating the qualification. If the vote passed, Californian would be required to present a government-issued ID at polling places. Those voting by mail would need to provide the last four digits of a government ID, such as a driver’s license or Social Security number. Furthermore, county election offices and the secretary of state would be required to verify the citizenship of registered voters. California is currently one of 14 states, along with Washington D.C., that does not require ID at the polls.State Senator Tony Strickland of Huntington Beach, another key proponent, emphasized the normalcy of the requirement. “We already show ID for everyday activities like flying, opening a bank account and picking up prescription medications. Thirty-six other states and many countries around the world already use voter ID,” Mr. Strickland told CalMatters, adding, “Californians deserve secure, transparent elections.”The debate in California mirrors national GOP efforts, encouraged by President Trump, to tighten voting restrictions based on unproven claims of election fraud. The campaign has amassed a large war chest, raising roughly $10 million in the past year. Major financial support has come from Julie Luckey, mother of tech billionaire Palmer Luckey, and a $4 million contribution from Republican megadonor Richard Uihlein.“This is an initiative that’s incredibly popular amongst Democrats and Republicans,” Mr. Strickland told CalMatters. “I think the only way we don’t get this passed is if we get [outspent]. So we’re working very hard with an on-the-ground campaign apparatus.”Opponents, including powerful labor unions and voting rights groups like the ACLU of Northern California, are gearing up for a fight — though their current funding lags at around $250,000. They argue the measure is a voter suppression tactic that will disproportionately disenfranchise people of color and lower-income residents who may lack the necessary documents.
