CBS News Announces End to Radio Service After Run of Almost 100 Years

CBS News notified its staff and some 700 affiliates Friday that it will be ending its radio service this spring after a run of almost 100 years marked by such broadcasting landmarks as Edward R. Murrow’s World War II reports from London.The decision is part of a broader restructuring of the Tiffany network’s news division under its new editor-in-chief, Bari Weiss, who also announced an unspecified number of staff across the news division would be told they are being laid off by the end of the day. Ms. Weiss took over the role in October following the acquisition of CBS by Paramount Skydance.In one of two notes to staff reproduced by the Hollywood Reporter, Ms. Weiss and the CBS News president, Tom Cibrowski, wrote that “ all positions within the CBS News Radio team are being eliminated” as the radio service shuts down on May 22.“We understand how difficult this news is for our staff and their colleagues, who have worked side by side with us to cover some of the most significant stories of our time,” their message said.Calling the move difficult but necessary, the managers said a shift in radio station programming strategies, “coupled with challenging economic realities, has made it impossible to continue the service.”“For nearly 100 years, CBS News Radio has delivered original reporting to the nation — from Edward R. Murrow’s World War II reports in London to today’s daily White House updates,” Ms. Weiss and Mr..Cibrowski noted in a bow to the radio service’s storied history.“Our signature broadcast, ‘World News Roundup,’ remains the longest-running newscast in the country. CBS News Radio served as the foundation for everything we have built since 1927.”Ms Weiss and Mr. Cibrowski said they are committed to supporting the journalist who will lose their jobs “with care and respect as we wind down operations. They have been critical to our success and remain treasured friends and professionals.”In a separate note to all CBS News staff, the managers said reductions in force affecting about 6 percent of staff across the division are unavoidable because the news business is “changing radically” and the network must change with it.“New audiences are burgeoning in new places, and we are pressing forward with ambitious plans to grow and invest so that we can be there for them,” they wrote. “That means some parts of our newsroom must get smaller to make room for the things we must build to remain competitive.”The two acknowledged that “this is a difficult time” for those who will be let go because “these aren’t just names on a list. They are talented, committed colleagues who have been critical to our success. We’ll treat them all with care and respect.”
