Comedian John Oliver Gets His Wish To Star in a Soap Opera With Guest Appearance on ‘General Hospital’

The host of HBO’s “Last Week Tonight,” John Oliver, is making a foray into a daytime acting role and fulfilling his wish of appearing on a soap opera. On Monday, ABC released a promotional video for Mr. Oliver’s three-episode guest appearance on “General Hospital,” which provides few details about his character or the episodes’ storylines, apart from a reference to completing a prototype. Fans speculated that the episodes would include the completion of a cold fusion device. A narrator says, “John Oliver guest stars,” as the late-night host dressed in a black suit and tie is flanked by two men in tactical gear, followed by a close-up of his face. The appearance comes months after Mr. Oliver asked for a guest appearance on the long-running soap opera. On March 8, he admitted to being “jealous” of sports analyst Stephen A. Smith’s recurring gig on “General Hospital.” He played an “insane” clip of Mr. Smith’s character shooting an “imposter nurse.”“I want to be part of that world,” Mr. Oliver said. “To all the soap operas out there, let me say this: I am officially offering myself to you. Write me a role, and I will be on your set so fast, it will make your head spin.”Mr. Oliver listed several conditions, such as having a “ridiculous” name and a “juicy” role that involved “murder, or slapping, or being slapped, or being someone’s long-lost something.” He also said he wanted a dramatic close-up of his face, which the promo delivers. In a statement, the executive producer of “General Hospital,” Frank Valentini, said, “When John Oliver publicly threw down the gauntlet and said he wanted to appear on a soap, we didn’t hesitate for a second. He was everything you’d hope he’d be: prepared, professional, funny, and genuinely kind to everyone on set.”“He plays an integral character in the story, and I can’t wait for fans to see who he crosses paths with in Port Charles,” Mr. Valentini said.Mr. Oliver said that his guest appearance on the long-running show was “everything I hoped it would be,” and that it was a “true honor to be a small stain on the history of this illustrious show.”The three episodes featuring Mr. Oliver will air on July 2, July 3, and July 6.
