Comedy Venues Become Frontline for Israel-Gaza War Protests

In a growing trend affecting comedians across North America and beyond, live comedy venues have increasingly become sites of protest regarding the Israel-Hamas war. The latest flashpoint occurred Tuesday when a performance by Israeli comedian and Israel Defense Forces reservist Guy Hochman was abruptly canceled after pro-Palestinian demonstrators blocked the venue’s entrance.Mr. Hochman expressed his frustration on Instagram following the shutdown. “Sons of ******* are blocking the entrance to the club, and the police decided not to approve the show,” he wrote. The New York Police Department reportedly determined that the blockade and potential for unrest posed a significant risk to public safety, ordering the cancellation of the event.Protest organizers, including the Palestinian Youth Movement, celebrated the cancellation online as a “victory,” having branded Mr. Hochman a “war criminal” due to satirical and provocative videos he filmed while serving with the IDF in Gaza. The incident in New York is not an anomaly but part of a widening intersection of entertainment and geopolitical conflict, which has spawned a campaign in which activists are targeting comedians based on their political stances or national service.Just days before the New York cancellation, Mr. Hochman faced a similar, though less successful, disruption in Toronto. On January 19, he was detained at the airport for six hours following a complaint filed by the Belgium-based Hind Rajab Foundation, which accused him of “incitement to genocide.”While Mr. Hochman was eventually released and the Toronto show proceeded, the atmosphere was volatile, resulting in physical altercations and an assault on his manager. The targeting of comedians has extended beyond Israeli nationals to major international stars. Jerry Seinfeld has faced repeated interruptions during his tour due to his vocal support for Israel since the October 7 Hamas attacks. This week at Aurora, Illinois, and last year at Sydney, Australia, protesters have disrupted Mr. Seinfeld’s sets, while dozens of students walked out of his commencement speech at Duke University in May.During a show in Sydney, Mr. Seinfeld addressed the demonstrators directly from the stage. “You think that it’s ruining the night … it doesn’t affect me … all these people, you’re ruining their night,” he told the hecklers. In Eugene, Oregon, in August, activists gathered outside the Hult Center to protest Mr. Seinfeld, criticizing his refusal to say “Free Palestine” in a viral clip. The political pressure on comedy clubs is cutting both ways, with venues becoming increasingly risk-averse. While Mr. Hochman and Mr. Seinfeld endured protests for their pro-Israel stances, other comedians have faced cancellations for pro-Palestinian material. The situation stretches back to 2023. Bay Area comedian Dauood Naimyar reported that a comedy club in Dallas canceled his two-night stint after he posted jokes on social media attempting to inform people about the situation in the Middle East.Despite the blockade in New York, Mr. Hochman remained defiant. Following the cancellation, he performed an impromptu set for his audience outside in the freezing cold. In a Facebook post Wednesday morning, Mr. Hochman declared that the protests would not stop his tour.“The production team and I are working on another show that could take place as soon as tomorrow,” Mr. Hochman wrote on X. “Continuing the journey — you, me, and the flag of all of us. They won’t wipe the smile off our faces. Am Yisrael Chai.”
