Though the political honeymoon between Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni of Italy and President Trump may be over, the alliance between the Arsenal of Democracy and the Seed of Aeneas looks likely to endure. That’s because the stakes are too high to let Italy’s own special relationship with America be sundered.No one knows this better than Signora Meloni. The 80-year bond between the Italian republic and America is certainly being strained by a contretemps over Iran. Yet this is not a fight peculiar to Italy or its doughty premier. America’s defense links are being called into question across pretty much all of Europe. The collapse of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization would be a slippery slope.The NATO alliance, after all, is the quintessence of the rules-based order that brought peace to a war-ravaged continent. Shorn of America’s military might and geopolitical leadership, Europe could once again fall prey to the factionalism, revanchism, and ethnic cleansing that sparked two blood-soaked global conflicts in the first half of the 20th century.Signora Meloni is looking beyond the name-calling and pearl-clutching to chart for the two nations a path forward, one that predates King Charles’s eloquent call for reconciliation and renewal in a speech to Congress. Though “I haven’t heard from Trump,” said Signora Meloni, “relations with the U.S. are still solid.”Moreover, in an earlier statement, she averred that “Freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz is clearly an absolutely central issue for our nations — for Italy, for Europe, and for the international community as a whole.” This “cornerstone principle of international law,” as Italy’s premier stated, is a fundamental Western precept.Italy will flex its naval muscle in the Strait, she vowed. Yet it will be as part of an international coalition with France and the U.K. and could be under United Nations auspices. “It is clear,” said the prime minister, “that an international naval presence in Hormuz can only be initiated once hostilities have ceased,” and “with an exclusively defensive posture.” Furthermore, she underscored the necessity of ensuring that Iran renounces nuclear weapons — and “the building of a security architecture in which no nation is threatened” by the Ayatollahs’ pursuit of such weapons of mass destruction. And while the Italian economy has been impeded by the crisis in Iran, “I haven’t changed my mind,” said Signora Meloni, “on the issue of defense spending.”She reminded reporters that “responsible people should also do what’s right, not just what’s immediately popular.” Although economic matters must now predominate, defense spending remains “an absolute priority.” Even at the outset of the Iran conflict, Italy’s defense minister, Guido Crosetto, declared that Italy is “part of NATO,” and fully integrated into its structures.”In highlighting this bond with America, Mr. Crosetto reaffirmed the “century-old relationship of friendship” between Rome and Washington, one that is unbreakable — no matter who occupies the Oval Office. Mr. Trump and Signora Meloni may have had a bitter falling out. Yet the Energy Department’s under secretary for science, Dario Gil, has hinted at a possible rapprochement.According to Decode 39, at the U.S.–Italy Trusted Tech Dialogue in Washington, Mr. Gil suggested that “a limited number of trusted partners’ could be involved in the Genesis Mission,” an American program designed to accelerate scientific discovery through AI and supercomputing. “For countries like Italy — strong in nuclear physics, materials science, and supercomputing — the opportunity is tangible.”On Saturday, Signora Meloni will become the second longest-serving post-World War II executive in the history of the Italian republic, and, by September of next year, the first among modern premiers to fill out a full five-year term. The stability that a woman named Giorgia has brought to the Magic Boot is reflected in the resoluteness she brings to the entirety of the West.
