David Beckham Can’t Outrun Family Drama — Even at Davos

While geopolitical and economic clashes are dominating the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, the arrival of soccer legend David Beckham has put the spotlight on a different kind of simmering feud.Mr. Beckham touched down in the mountain resort town on Tuesday to record an interview for the forum’s podcast, making his first public appearance since his son, Brooklyn, released a bombshell statement regarding his estrangement from his family.As Mr. Beckham emerged from the taped conversation with organizational psychologist Adam Grant, the A-list celebrity was inundated with questions from reporters about his family. One reporter inquired: “David, do you have a message for Brooklyn this morning?” before adding: “David, are you disappointed that your family business is being aired in public?”Mr. Beckham refrained from responding and made his way to the exit. In the six-page statement, Brooklyn, who married actress Nicola Peltz in 2022, accused his family of trying to sabotage his relationship with his wife and putting “Brand Beckham” above any real family values.“For my entire life, my parents have controlled narratives in the press about our family,” he wrote on Monday. “The performative social media posts, family events and inauthentic relationships have been a fixture of the life I was born into. Recently, I have seen with my own eyes the lengths that they’ll go through to place countless lies in the media, mostly at the expense of innocent people, to preserve their own facade. But I believe the truth always comes out.”Brooklyn alleged several wrongdoings committed by his mother, former Spice Girls singer Victoria Beckham, against his new wife, including claims that Mrs. Beckham backed out of designing Ms. Peltz’s wedding gown at the “11th hour” and had “repeatedly invited women” from his past into his life in ways “that were clearly intended” to make him and his new bride “uncomfortable.”The 26-year-old aspiring chef also alleged that his mother “hijacked” his first dance with his wife at their wedding, during which she “danced very inappropriately on” him “in front of everyone,” and made him feel “uncomfortable” and “humiliated.”Brooklyn went on to address rumors that his wife, the daughter of billionaire investor Nelson Peltz, “controls” him, refuting the narrative as “completely backwards.” He added: “I have been controlled by my parents for most of my life. I grew up with overwhelming anxiety. For the first time in my life, since stepping away from my family, that anxiety has disappeared.” The Beckhams have not publicly responded to Brooklyn’s allegations. Speculation about trouble in the Beckham household has swirled for months as reports of Instagram unfollows and press leaks have dominated the tabloids. The tensions became particularly noticeable when Brooklyn and Ms. Peltz stopped appearing at Beckham family events and staged a vow renewal ceremony where the Beckhams were noticeably absent. The family, which includes children Brooklyn, Romeo, Cruz, and Harper, appeared as tight as ever in their 2023 Netflix docuseries, “Beckham.” In one episode, Mr. Beckham was recorded boasting about his children, stating: “And they could be little shits and they’re not. And that’s why I say I’m so proud of my children. And I’m so in awe of my children, the way they’ve turned out.”
