Expect Trump To Tackle Both Greenland and Globalism in His Davos Address

The number of American delegates at the World Economic Forum’s annual meeting at Davos, Switzerland this year is greater than the total number of troops sent to Greenland by seven European countries to symbolically “defend” the Danish territory. Both cohorts were deployed to send messages but only one matters.Asked by a reporter about our North Atlantic Treaty allies allies holding military exercises in Greenland, President Trump replied: “Well, that wasn’t a military, they sent a few people.” He added that “It’s going to be a very interesting Davos.” Indeed.The president is scheduled to address the assembly of world leaders tomorrow. His speech will likely include his interest in the strategically situated and resource-rich Danish territory, but his overall message will be even more concerning to Western leaders — their few dozen boots on the frozen ground of Greenland won’t save the post-World War II “international rules-based order.”That system of global institutions and agreements designed to promote peace and security in the wake of World War II has left the Western world weakened and vulnerable, according to Mr. Trump. Witness the European continent where decades of enthusiasm for the rules-based order and its diet of globalism has produced climate-change fanaticism, unchecked mass migration, suicidal energy policies, authoritarian EU control, business-killing regulations, and state censorship across the continent, wreaking havoc on European economies and societies. The Danes, together with their EU partners, are too enfeebled to guarantee security for land in America’s strategic backyard, so the United States has to do it. “European weakness,” Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said at Davos this week, “necessitates U.S. control of Greenland for global stability.”Mr. Trump could have simply rebuilt the military bases in Greenland that America abandoned over the years if he wanted to defend American interests in the region. He chose another path because the interests he wants to defend are far broader.He has conducted a threat assessment and sees three evolving and growing challenges to American security and prosperity: Communist China, the quest for AI dominance, and radical Islam. His question is: Which of those three can Europe credibly help America to counter if the continent continues on its current course? His answer: None. Globalism has stripped Europe of its capacity to defend itself and others. Even more concerning is the realization that globalism’s reach extends to America where the open borders, climate-change activist, Marxist, Islamist, Antifa crowd has assumed political power. The network of NGOs and global institutions that support these anti-nation-state aggressors is the same one that broke Europe in Mr. Trump’s view, and he is determined to break it before it does irreversible damage to America.Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick today at Davos put it plainly: “Globalization has failed the West and the United States,” while “America First is a different model.” Challenging NATO at the World Economic Forum, whose founder, Klaus Schwab, leveraged organizations like NATO, the World Health Organization, the EU, and the UN toward his vision of a globalist “Great Reset” is an unmistakable message. European leaders shudder at the thought. They have prospered under the current system, weaponizing and monetizing everything from digital surveillance to immigration while suppressing dissent and evading accountability. Their populations pay the price for their decisions and America underwrites security guarantees. Mr. Trump’s determination to control Greenland is a domino European leaders can’t afford to let fall. President Emmanuel Macron appealed to his personal relationship with Mr. Trump in a letter inviting him to dinner, hoping to resolve their differences over Greenland privately. There are arguments to be made against breaking the time-honored bonds between civilizational siblings, separated by an ocean and bound together by shared values. However, as Great Britain threatens to ban an American social media platform, X, and leads the world in arrests for speech-crimes, France cancels its own holiday celebrations unable to protect its citizens from an imported terrorism threat, and Germany executes controlled demolition of its power plants, Mr. Trump is increasingly less convinced that America and Europe share more than history.He responded to Mr. Macron’s invitation by posting his text message online for the world to see. He is also threatening tariffs on all seven of the European nations who sent troops to Greenland if a deal is not “reached for the Complete and Total purchase of Greenland,” as Mr. Trump puts it, by February 1.Mr. Trump’s insistence that we change our perspective to meet the realities of our time is jarring. For most of us, it requires letting go of a nostalgic narrative about Europe and coming to terms with unfulfilled utopian promises about globalism. It also requires acceptance of a kind of power-based politics that makes most Westerners squeamish. Not everyone is emotionally ready for that.We should get ready, though, because a small army of Americans will fill the seats tomorrow as Mr. Trump delivers his message at Davos. We don’t know exactly what he will say but we do know what he means to do — break apart the old globalist system and free America to pursue its national interests.
