Guilfoyle Faces Possible Probe After Trump Donor Claims She Begged Him for $100,000 To Pay American Express Bill

The State Department’s inspector general has reportedly opened an investigation into the Ambassador to Greece, Kimberly Guilfoyle over her conduct including late night partying and lavish lifestyle as a new report claims she tried to shake down a high-dollar Trump donor in exchange for administration access.Some of the allegations surround possible substance abuse, the use of private aircraft, and her relationship with an energy and construction company, the Daily Mail reported using unnamed sources.The paper cited a toxic workplace inside the Athens mission with Ms. Guilfoyle’s repeated outbursts with threats to fire subordinates. She reportedly demoted drivers on two occasions because she didn’t like the way they made left turns.In another reported incident, Ms. Guilfoyle was drinking at 4:00 a.m. and called the head of her security detail to ask for ice. She demoted him when he didn’t wake up to fulfill her request. The paper reported that Ms. Guilfoyle also fired her ethics manager over a dispute about the source of funding for renovations to the ambassador’s home.Ms. Guilfoyle has raised the profile of the Athens assignment and has made headlines with her public appearances. In July she jetted off to Paris with her stylist to attend the city’s Haute Couture Week.A separate Wall Street Journal report looked into her relationship with a rich MAGA ally and promises to provide administration access for large amounts of money.Trump donor Eric Deters claims Ms. Guilfoyle begged him for $100,000 to pay her American Express bill. He says in exchange, Ms. Guilfoyle, Donald Trump Jr.’s former fiancée, offered access to administration officials to help with personal tax and legal issues, the Journal reported. Mr. Deters didn’t ultimately give her the money over concerns it would end his marriage, according to the report.Mr. Deters on Thursday shared his allegations and text exchanges with several news outlets. He said that he provided the Journal with the messages after his emails to White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles, Mr. Trump, and Ms. Guilfoyle complaining about unfulfilled promises went unanswered. “I gave them one last opportunity and they didn’t take me up on it,” Mr. Deters told the Bulwark.Mr. Deters said he was planning to sue Ms. Guilfoyle and her lawyer for claiming the text messages are fake.The Journal previously raised questions about Ms. Guilfoyle’s relationship with a top lobbyist for a Greek construction company. The paper reported that Christos Marafatsos has frequently attended meetings she held with foreign officials. Mr. Marafatsos is often seen at Ms. Guilfoyle’s side and was described as her unofficial gatekeeper. The pair have also been spotted together at the concert of Greek pop star Konstantinos Argiros.Ms. Guilfoyle, who was once married to California Governor Gain Newsom, welcomed Secretary of State Marco Rubio to Athens Thursday with a long hug in front of cameras, but she did not answer questions from the press.Mr. Rubio declined to answer questions about Ms. Guilfoyle as he prepared to leave Athens late Wednesday to head to Portugal. “The game is, someone gives information to a newspaper or a media outlet. The media outlet reports it. You immediately turn to me and say, ‘I need you to respond to our reporting.’ That’s not the way this process works,” Mr. Rubio told reporters.“I don’t even know if it’s true or not true, so it’s just not going to work that way and it most certainly is not going to work that way when I’m sitting in another country,” Mr. Rubio said.Vice President Vance also demurred on Thursday when asked to react to the scenario of an American ambassador asking someone to pay off debt in exchange for access to government officials. “I don’t know the full details. What I find with these stories is that you never want to comment in a purely abstract way because a lot of times the details really matter and the details and the context inform the reality of the situation,” Mr. Vance said.“I can’t say with confidence that the case you’re talking about is actually reflective of the way you’re describing it,” Mr. Vance continued. “Context really matters on this stuff, so I’d like to get the full story before offering a real opinion,” Mr. Vance said.An American ambassador to the Czech Republic under President Obama, Norm Eisen, said the allegations were shocking. “I was an ambassador myself and I’ve never seen anything like this,” Mr. Eisen said on X. “She denies it, but you can smell this one from Athens!” Some Congressional Democrats have called on the State Department to investigate Ms. Guilfoyle. The top Democrat on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, Congressman Gregory Meeks, wrote a letter to Mr. Rubio calling for her removal if the allegations against her are accurate.President Trump nominated Ms. Guilfoyle, a former Fox News host, for the ambassador role in December 2024, just days after Mr. Trump was photographed with socialite Bettina Anderson, a woman whom he has since married. The president has not publicly commented on the allegations against Ms. Guilfoyle. The State Department Office of Press Relations did not immediately reply to The New York Sun’s request for comment.
