Iran Says It Won’t Negotiate Under Threats as Trump Presses for Deal Before Ceasefire Expires

Iran warned President Trump that it won’t negotiate under threats as the two-week ceasefire is set to expire on Wednesday. Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Ghalibaf issued a statement on X saying that President Trump is attempting to “turn this negotiating table — in his own imagination — into a table of surrender or to justify renewed warmongering” by imposing a naval blockade on Iranian ports. “We do not accept negotiations under the shadow of threats, and in the past two weeks, we have prepared to reveal new cards on the battlefield,” Mr. Ghalibaf said. Iran is yet to confirm if they will meet with the American delegation, led by Vice President JD Vance, in Pakistan before the ceasefire expires. “So far, no delegation from Iran has departed for Islamabad, Pakistan; whether it is the main or subsidiary delegation; primary or secondary,” Iranian state TV reported on Tuesday morning. The head of Iran’s judiciary, Gholamhossein Mohseni Ejei, predicted there is a “strong possibility” of renewed attacks and that the U.S. Naval blockade “is undoubtedly a clear violation, and the Islamic Republic will definitely respond.”Mr. Trump meanwhile told “The John Fredericks Show,” that Iran is “going to negotiate, and if they don’t, they’re going to see problems like they’ve never seen before. Hopefully they’ll make a fair deal, and they’ll build their country back up.”CNN meanwhile reported that American officials considered Mr. Trump’s repeated public comments over the weekend about the negotiations with Iran as counterproductive. “The Iranians didn’t appreciate POTUS negotiating through social media and making it appear as if they had signed off on issues they hadn’t yet agreed to, and ones that aren’t popular with their people back home,” CNN cited a person familiar with the talks saying. Mr. Trump claimed that Iran had agreed to most of Washington’s demands, including giving up its enriched uranium, which is seen as a key issue in the ongoing talks. White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt responded to CNN’s report, saying: “The United States has never been closer to a good deal with Iran, unlike the horrible deal made by the Obama Administration, thanks to President Trump’s negotiating ability. Anyone who cannot see President Trump’s tactics to play the long game are either stupid or willfully ignorant.”The president took to Truth Social on Tuesday morning, claiming that Operation Midnight Hammer in June last year “was a complete and total obliteration of the Nuclear Dust sites in Iran.”“Therefore, digging it out will be a long and difficult process. Fake News CNN, and other corrupt Media Networks and Platforms, fail to give our great aviators the credit they deserve – Always trying to demean and belittle – LOSERS!!!” he added. The head of the International Energy Agency (IEA), Fatih Birol, meanwhile told France Inter radio that the war between Iran, Israel and the U.S. has created the largest energy crisis ever. “This is indeed the biggest crisis in history. The crisis is already huge, if you combine the effects of the petrol crisis and the gas crisis with Russia,” he said.
