Iranian Regime Names Mojtaba Khamenei New Supreme Leader as IDF Warns It Will Pursue Him

Mojtaba Khamenei has been appointed the next Supreme Leader of Iran by the Assembly of Experts after his father was killed in an Israeli-American attack that started the war. Born in 1969 in the city of Mashhad, Mojtaba served in the Iran-Iraq war between 1980 and 1988 and later studied Islam in the holy city of Qom. After his father, Ali Khamenei, became Supreme Leader in 1989, Mojtaba’s influence grew as he fomented strong ties with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. As the new Supreme Leader Mojtaba now officially commands the regime’s forces currently at war with Israel and the United States. Often described as more hardline than his father, Mojtaba is not expected to “surrender” to America and Israel as President Trump has demanded. Mr. Trump has previously called Mojtaba a “lightweight,” and “unacceptable to me. We want someone that will bring harmony and peace to Iran.” If the Supreme Leader doesn’t get “approval” from the U.S., “he’s not going to last long,” Mr. Trump said. “We want to make sure that we don’t have to go back every 10 years, when you don’t have a president like me that’s not going to do it,” the president told ABC News. Mr. Trump has also expressed a need to be directly involved in choosing the next leader of Iran. The Israel Defense Forces, meanwhile, put out a statement in Farsi on Sunday, threatening to pursue the next Supreme Leader. “We want to tell you that the hand of the State of Israel will continue to pursue every successor and every person who seeks to appoint a successor,” the IDF said. “We warn all those who intend to participate in the successor selection meeting that we will not hesitate to target you, either. This is a warning,” the army added. The IDF struck a building belonging to the Assembly of Experts last week in what appeared to be a direct attempt to interfere with the process of choosing the next leader. China’s foreign ministry spokesman, Guo Jiakun, meanwhile said that Beijing “opposes interference in other countries’ internal affairs under any pretext, and Iran’s sovereignty, security, and territorial integrity should be respected” and that the appointment of a new leader in Iran “is a decision by the Iranian side based on its constitution.”
