Italy’s Giorgia Meloni, Pivoting From Spat With Trump, Will Take Leading Role at July’s NATO Summit

Et tu, Donald? President Trump’s outburst against Prime Minister Meloni of Italy following the recent G-7 summit at Évian was undeserved by a loyal ally — and weakened Western unity. The spat heard ’round the world, though, does not herald the demise of the Atlantic alliance.Rather, it underscores Giorgia Meloni’s determination to champion the West. Preventive or preemptive wars of choice are prohibited by Italy’s constitution.Nevertheless, Signora Meloni is committed to flexing the Magic Boot’s considerable military muscle in concert with allies in defense of the Western project. She possesses an uncanny ability to translate vision into tangible success — and Ukraine is a case in point.As she noted at the close of the G-7 summit that “we had a discussion with President Zelensky and reviewed the situation on the ground, which is very different from what certain Russian propaganda keeps trying to sell.”Mr. Putin is being defanged, and going forward everyone “agreed on the need to continue guaranteeing support for Kyiv by keeping the pressure up on Moscow.” Signora Meloni stressed that the “West’s unity and firm stance continue to be the most effective way to create the conditions necessary for a real negotiation process.”Italy will play a pivotal role at the NATO Summit early next month at Ankara. Rome will take center stage as the alliance focuses on its southern flank. Together with France, Italy will supply Turkey with a key mobile surface-to-air missile system.Despite tensions with Mr. Trump, Signora Meloni will employ her trademark negotiating expertise to position Italy as the critical diplomatic bridge between America and Europe.
