Italy’s Meloni Prioritizes Western Cohesion

Despite President Trump’s growing antipathy to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, Giorgia Meloni’s mission is clear: preserving, protecting, and defending the West. Yes, as Italy’s prime minister, she must first prioritize Rome’s national interests. That, though, does not mean abandoning America.Signora Meloni understands better than most that a house divided is more likely to fall. She would no doubt say that NATO must be preserved to ensure the success and survival of Western civilization and its freedoms.Indeed, as Politico reported, Signora Meloni is emphatic in her geopolitical conviction: “The West stands on two legs: the European and the American one. If they don’t move in the same direction, it risks paralysis.” The premier further warned that it is of paramount importance “to work to ensure the unity of the West.”Following World War II, the North Atlantic Treaty was signed to solve the German question and to thwart and contain Soviet expansionism. Today, Signora Meloni recognizes that Russian expansionism, radical Islamist terrorism, and a burgeoning People’s Republic of China pose existential dangers.When it comes to this worldview, Signora Meloni has a key ally in the president of the Italian Republic, Sergio Mattarella. According to the big newswire in Italy, ANSA, Signore Mattarella, while on an official visit to the Czech Republic, declared that America and Europe “are inextricably linked by shared values.”That is, he continued, “NATO is a matter of bilateral interest, and its historical significance is growing, not diminishing.” Nevertheless, the left is exploiting the seeming schism between the Trump administration and Europe. Others are calling for a snap election before 2027, using the cudgel of the victory of the confirmatory judicial faction in the March referendum. Signora Meloni pointed out how party affiliation dictates the Italian and global left’s reaction to American military operations.The left hailed Americans when they liberated Europe from Nazi fascism and celebrated the “statesmanship” of President Clinton’s bombings in Serbia. Yet when a Republican American administration intervenes to halt massacres in Iran, it is labeled a “threat to democracy.”Signora Meloni’s goal is to keep the “two pillars” of the West, Europe and North America, forever aligned, no matter the party affiliation, while maintaining the ability to disagree when necessary. When it comes to the final frontier, Italy and America are in full agreement.On March 31, according to the European Spaceflight website, ”The Italian government and NASA have signed an agreement to cooperate on the development of a U.S.-led lunar surface base.” Italy’s Thales Alenia Space Italia, under an Italian Space Agency contract, is designing a lunar habitation module.“We will return to the Moon, and this time to stay.
