Los Angeles Public Schools Sued Over ‘Bizarre’ Race-Based Policies That Discriminate Against White Students

The Los Angeles Unified School District is facing a lawsuit claiming that a policy intended to remedy past discrimination now harms white students.The 1776 Project Foundation says that a policy allocating more funding, staff, and smaller class sizes to schools with predominantly Hispanic, black, or Asian students is discriminatory. More than 600 schools in the district have the added benefits while less than 100 do not, according to the suit.“The District engages in and publicly touts — a program of overt discrimination against a new minority: White students,” the suit claims. It adds that students of Middle Eastern descent and others who “fall on the wrong side of the District’s bizarre racial and ethnic line-drawing,” are impacted as well.Filed in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California, the complaint alleges the affected students are being denied equal access to educational resources and opportunities in the district in violation of the Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment, Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, and California’s Proposition 209, which prohibits racial preferences in public education.Students from the minority-majority schools also receive extra support on their applications to magnet schools, according to the lawsuit.One of the plaintiffs is an unnamed parent whose child attends one of the schools without added resources and was denied admission to a magnet program.The foundation seeks a permanent injunction to halt the school district’s “race-based programming and ensure that all students receive equal treatment, regardless of racial classification.”“These policies are not just unfair — they’re unconstitutional,” 1776 Project Foundation’s president, Aiden Buzzetti, said in a release announcing the suit. “What began as a temporary measure to address segregation has become a rigid system of racial favoritism that excludes thousands of students from equal opportunity.”With more than half-a-million students, the Los Angeles public school system is the second-largest in the country behind New York City.The district told the Associated Press that it was unable to comment on pending litigation but released a statement saying, “Los Angeles Unified remains firmly committed to ensuring all students have meaningful access to services and enriching educational opportunities.”The 1776 Project Foundation was founded last year with the goal to add conservative voices to local school boards. It also backed phone restrictions in schools, protections for girls’ sports under Title IX, and creating frameworks for how AI is used in education.
