Meloni Scores Electoral Wins in Local Elections, Postponing Yet Again the ‘Much-Heralded Collapse of the Center-Right’

After the Italian prime minister’s center-right coalition stunned the commentariat by winning local elections at Venice, Reggio Calabria, and Crotone, Signora Meloni quipped: “And again today, the much-heralded collapse of the center-right is postponed until tomorrow.”Pundits predicting municipal defeats were left slack-jawed that the center-right unexpectedly held on to La Serenissima and scored a major victory in Rhegium. Though there will be bumps along the political road to national elections in 2027, Signora Meloni is a study in resilient pragmatism — from economics to geopolitics.Yet according to Amy Kazmin in the Financial Times: “Italy’s macroeconomic performance remains lackluster at best.” However, she fails to note that Italian household income rose by 1.1 percent, unemployment dropped to 5.7 percent, and investment grew by 3.5 percent.Italy’s homeownership rate is among the highest in Europe at 77 percent — three-quarters of Italians live in owner-occupied homes. Still, the energy upheaval and microeconomic dislocation triggered by the conflict in the Middle East and the Russo–Ukrainian war have roiled the Italian economy.Signora Meloni also blamed the lumbering European Union in her address to the General Confederation of Italian Industry. “The enormous, main weakness that affects us directly, she said, “is the current structure of the European Union.” She decried “a bureaucratic behemoth that has all too often sacrificed competitiveness and strategic growth on the altar of ideological and technocratic approaches.”Consequently, Signora Meloni is turbo-charging infrastructure revitalization, introducing entrepreneurial economic reforms and pioneering overseas direct investment.Signora Meloni conducted a diplomatic master class in negotiating a geopolitical deal of global consequence. Italy has taken the lead in forging a breakthrough relationship that spans the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor.Having conferred at Rome’s Villa Doria Pamphilj, Signora Meloni and India’s prime minister, Narendra Modi, forged what Italy’s premier has termed a “special strategic partnership.” At a joint press conference with Mr. Modi at the Eternal City, Signora Meloni underscored the transcendent nature of the accord: “I would not consider it an understatement to call this day historic for relations between our nations.”The whole of Europe will be economically linked with the Indian subcontinent. Though the American press largely ignored the significance of Signora Meloni’s achievement, Israel’s Jerusalem Post grasped what the Meloni-Modi compact portends.Giorgia Valente reported that the two nations crafted a “Special Strategic Partnership,” that encompasses “trade, investment, supply chains, critical minerals, clean technologies, semiconductors, ports, maritime security, defense industrial cooperation, innovation, space, migration,” and what is being mooted as an India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor.In addition to increasing trade between the two countries to $23 billion by 2029, the agreement finds Italy leveraging its economic heft, military expertise, and diplomatic acumen. For the first time in decades, Rome is punching commensurate with its weight.When Signora Meloni lost her judicial referendum, she did not resign a la Matteo Renzi. Nor did she entertain the notion of a snap election a la Emmanuel Macron. Though she changes her mind when the facts change, she appears to be guided by two intertwined principles: Italy First and Western solidarity.To that end, Signora Meloni’s Italy has furnished Ukraine with crucial military aid — $3.5 billion to date — that has helped Kyiv stave off the Russian Bear. Following Moscow’s devastating Oreshnik hypersonic missile attack on the Ukrainian capital, Signora Meloni pledged renewed support.“We will continue to work with determination together with European and international partners to seek the path towards a just and lasting peace,” she asserted.
