* Campaigning in Wisconsin and Ohio, Senator Kerry mounted fresh attacks blaming President Bush for the disappearance of hundreds of tons of high-grade explosives in Iraq. “John Kennedy knew how to take responsibility for the mistakes he made and Mr. President, it’s long since time for you to start taking responsibility for the mistakes you made,” Mr. Kerry said, referring to a bungled invasion of Cuba in 1961.
* Stumping in Michigan, Ohio, and Pennsylvania, Mr. Bush accused his Democratic rival of emboldening America’s enemies in Iraq and elsewhere by blowing in the political winds. “Consistency is not the senator’s strong suit,” he said.
WHERE THEY ARE TODAY
* Mr. Bush will be in Manchester and Portsmouth in New Hampshire, and in Toledo and Columbus in Ohio. He is planning to overnight in Columbus, Ohio.
* Also focusing on battleground states, Mr. Kerry will be in Orlando, West Palm Beach, and Miami in Florida. He will spend the night in Appleton, Wis.
POLLS
* A spate of new state polls had Mr. Bush ahead in Florida, the Democrat leading in Ohio and Michigan, and the candidates essentially tied in Iowa, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, and Oregon.
